10 Things You May Not Know About YouTube

10 Things You May Not Know About YouTube | iEduc | Scoop.it
Social media verse is full of some best kept secrets. YouTube is one of them. Yet when I think about cultural shifts enabled by social media, YouTube is the place that comes most vibrantly to mind. It's big, wide and deep.

In my last post I mentioned that the social media ‘verse is full of some best kept secrets. YouTube is one of them.

This Time cover from a couple of years ago (with the shiny mirrored screen) was prescient, but not quite enough… I’d cross that ‘You’ out and say ‘Us’. Hasn’t it felt that way these last couple of years? How we’ve grown a global collective consciousness?

Despite this cover, YouTube is not usually the first site that comes to mind when thinking about social media. I guess we take it a bit for granted while we wax rhapsodic about Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr and Quora. Yet when I think about cultural shifts enabled by social media, YouTube is the place that comes most vibrantly to mind. It’s big, wide and deep.

Mature. Eccentric. Probably not what you think it is.

YouTube has its Own Language

YouTube Auto-Curates In-Demand Topics with Auto-Generated Channels

YouTube Auto-Curates In-Demand Topics with Auto-Generated Channels | iEduc | Scoop.it

Robin Good: YouTube auto-generated channels are channels that are automatically created by dedicated algorithms to collect trending and popular videos by topic.

"Auto generated channels act like user channels in that you can subscribe to them and stay updated on new videos.

In addition, auto generated channels provide:

-> The ability to subscribe and get regular updates about this topic on YouTube on your feed

-> A way to find other channels related to this topic

-> More context about this topic from Wikipedia or other sources

YouTube algorithmically determines the central topics in a video and then uses that information to develop great collections of videos for any topic of interest.

These channels do not convey any editorial opinion.

Curating is more than clicking a share button (1 hour video by Steve Rosenbaum)

Ken's Key Takeaway:

Thank you to Giuseppe Mauriello for this quality review of Steve Rosenbaum's Video

I like how Rosenbaum says that data is like a forest fire.  It isn't going away.  It is a new reality that will keep spreading and spreading.  It is hard to see through the smoke.

Also....If you would start to watch every Youtube video starting now....it will take 8 years (without sleep)!

Society sends 294 Billion Emails a day

Ken

This presentation will explore how to plan a video curation strategy, how to determine what sources are appropriate for your visitors, and how you invite and curate user-generated and user-submitted content.

From article on Streamingmedia.com:

"Curation can solve the problem of abundance online, Steven Rosenbaum explained at the recent Streaming Media East conference in New York City. While creative professionals occasionally disagree with curation, it's a way for site owners to present strong material to site visitors and cut through the clutter.

"Content curators are distributors of collections," explained Rosenbaum.

...

That's the abundance problem. If you went ahead and made all the curators in the world go away, you'd still have this signal-to-noise problem that we laid out at the beginning of the talk. So, absolutely no way is curation the thing that is the enemy of creation."

A well-planned content curation strategy doesn't simply present a list of videos to site visitors. It presents a collection with personality. When curating materials to present, think about the persona that makes that collection unique..."
