DAKOTA 38 Film Screening | Facebook | IDLE NO MORE WISCONSIN | Scoop.it

Free Film Screening of the documentary "Dakota 38"

"In the spring of 2005, Jim Miller, a Native spiritual leader and Vietnam veteran, found himself in a dream riding on horseback across the great plains of South Dakota. Just before he awoke, he arrived at a riverbank in Minnesota and saw 38 of his Dakota ancestors hanged. At the time, Jim knew nothing of the largest mass execution in United States history, ordered by Abraham Lincoln on December 26, 1862. 'When you have dreams, you know when they come from the creator... As any recovered alcoholic, I made believe that I didn't get it. I tried to put it out of my mind, yet it's one of those dreams that bothers you night and day.'

Now, four years later, embracing the message of the dream, Jim and a group of riders retrace the 330-mile route of his dream on horseback from Lower Brule, South Dakota to Mankato, Minnesota to arrive at the hanging site on the anniversary of the execution. 'We can't blame the wasichus anymore. We're doing it to ourselves. We're selling drugs. We're killing our own people. That's what this ride is about, is healing.' This is the story of their journey- the blizzards they endure, the Native and Non-Native communities that house and feed them along the way, and the dark history they are beginning to wipe away."

Sarah LittleRedfeather Kalmanson's insight:

The Bad River and Kakagon sloughs compose the largest undeveloped wetland system on the Great Lakes. Because of its size, uniqueness and varied plant life, the Kakagon Sloughs is a designated National Natural Landmark. The 16,000 acre Bad River-Kagagon complex is diversely populated with over 28 plant communities and is home to over 70 rare plant and animal species. Groups like The Nature Conservancy and the Bad River Watershed Alliance have been working tirelessly to maintain the quality of the watershed in partnership with the Bad River Bad of Lake Superior Chippewa. The Wisconsin Wetlands Association named the Kakagon-Bad River Sloughs one of Wisconsin’s 100 Wetland Gems, noting the “extensive size and high quality of these Great Lakes coastal wetlands.”

200 attend listening session on Wis. mining bill : Madisondotcom #IdleNoMore #BadRiver | IDLE NO MORE WISCONSIN | Scoop.it
A hearing on proposed legislation that would streamline the state's mining laws drew at least 200 people to northern Wisconsin on Saturday, with most saying the measure would lead to devastating environmental damage.
Sarah LittleRedfeather Kalmanson's insight:

"The people here have been living in poverty for 50 to 100 years. That's all they know," Hurley resident Harry Ellsmore said. "... This mine opportunity is something that should not be taken lightly."

But Bob Tammen, who drove to the hearing from Minnesota, said prosperity never came to the Minnesota communities near the state's heavily mined Mesabi Range.

"We don't have a healthy main street along 100 miles of the Mesabi Range," Tammen said. "If mining brings prosperity, how come our communities don't have it?"
