While laughing children bob in kayaks along the sandy shores of Lake Superior, their somber parents hunch over picnic tables talking about their wild rice, their water, their fish and their way of life.

On Aug. 30, six Chippewa tribes of Lake Superior sent President Barack Obama a letter requesting the Department of the Interior prepare litigation to protect the wetlands, fisheries, waters and wildlife from mining. The mining area is honeycombed with 70 miles of rivers and streams that flow north into Lake Superior, which the tribes say would be threatened.

Wolf hunting still divides Wisconsin : Friends of the Wolf Wisconsin, has a response ... | IDLE NO MORE WISCONSIN | Scoop.it
Ask Wisconsinites their opinion about wolves, and the answer likely depends on where they live.

Friends of the Wolf Wisconsin, has a response ...

"Run Rampant! LOL. Yeah, 800 wolves in all of northern Wisconsin. We already had a compromise that worked beautifully before the hunt. A general wolf hunt will not help tensions it will only increase intolerance. Wolves are predators, and they play a vital role in the ecosystem. That can't be undermined. It's easy to draw conclusions about those who live around wolves therefore, dislike wolves more than those who don't.

However, those 75% really don't think there should be any predators on the landscape. Let's look at education levels. Those who have been exposed to more education about environmental issues, generally feel wolf hunting is not necessary. The more urban you get the more education levels rise. Madison is a highly educated city that's why you will hear more outcry. This is about culture and education of people. The biggest emotion driving this wolf hunt is hatred and fear of a wolf who in reality causes so little damage it's negligible. Don't want your hounds killed? Don't run hounds on wildlife. Let's talk about "rampant" disrespect for wildlife and wildlands with bear hunting, cattle grazing etc.

The reason for the wolf hunt doesn't have to do with really any of this actually, it's about allowing trophy hunting, mostly trapping, of wolves. Why are the quotas high in areas deep within national and state forest land where wolves should be? It's not that we are all bleeding hearts, it's that we actually understand the relationship wolves have with trophic cascades, herd health of deer and basic ecology."

One State Over, A Soon-To-Be Mine Stirs Up Controversy Of Its Own - #BurnSage #SacredGround | IDLE NO MORE WISCONSIN | Scoop.it

An under-construction mine in Michigan, much like one proposed in Wisconsin, is pitting businesses against environmentalists and Native Americans.

It's easy to notice that only a chain link fence separates the mine from Eagle Rock – a sacred site to the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, one of the Ojibwe tribes in the region. Tribal official Jessica Koski says tribal members can still worship at the rock, but says that their traditional practices are disrupted by the noise and viewshed.

Lundin says Eagle Mine will only operate for about eight years, and then the land next to Eagle Rock will be restored. Koski says the tribe questions the quality of the proposed reclamation and what worshippers will have to put up with in the meantime.

Al Gedicks

Dear Editor: Sen. Tom Tiffany, R-Hazelhurst, and Gogebic Taconite would like us to believe that the protesters who raided GTAC’s drill site, vandalized mining equipment and took a camera from a geologist were eco-terrorists who pose an ongoing threat to GTAC workers. The video that Tiffany played at a recent Senate hearing showed offensive behavior and foul language, but hardly it constitutes eco-terrorism. There was no physical violence and there has not been a single reported incident of interference with GTAC workers since the June incident.

To endlessly repeat this false allegation diverts public attention from the more serious issue of militarizing the mine site by deploying masked security guards with automatic weapons and closing off the mine site to independent scientific investigation of the most controversial mine project ever proposed in Wisconsin.

Why should anyone trust GTAC to disclose the environmental and health hazards of their project? GTAC recently threatened the Bad River Ojibwe tribe with legal action to prevent an independent scientist from identifying wetland areas in the mine site.

Who are the real eco-terrorists here? One protester who has been charged with robbery by force or an out-of-state coal-mining conglomerate whose mountain top removal operation will create massive piles of toxic mine waste that will destroy the largest remaining natural wild rice wetland in the entire Great Lakes Basin downstream on the Bad River Ojibwe Reservation?

Al Gedicks, executive secretary

Wisconsin Resources Protection Council

I think it is great that this day exists. The Native Americans deserve respect after we nearly wiped them of the face of the Earth to fulfill the American dream in the 1700s and 1800s. This is another great step in the transition from them being savages, to them being patriotic.
