The Last Mountain Movie - HELP STOP DIRTY COAL AND END MOUNTAINTOP REMOVAL MINING

The Last Mountain Movie - HELP STOP DIRTY COAL AND END MOUNTAINTOP REMOVAL MINING | IDLE NO MORE WISCONSIN | Scoop.it

In the valleys of Appalachia, a battle is being fought over a mountain. It is a battle with severe consequences that affect every American, regardless of their social status, economic background or where they live. It is a battle that has taken many lives and continues to do so the longer it is waged. It is a battle over protecting our health and environment from the destructive power of Big Coal.

The mining and burning of coal is at the epicenter of America’s struggle to balance its energy needs with environmental concerns. Nowhere is that concern greater than in Coal River Valley, West Virginia, where a small but passionate group of ordinary citizens are trying to stop Big Coal corporations, like Massey Energy, from continuing the devastating practice of Mountain Top Removal.

The citizens argue the practice of dynamiting the mountain’s top off to mine the coal within pollutes the air and water, is responsible for the deaths of their neighbors and spreads pollution to other states. Yet, regardless of evidence supporting these claims, Big Coal corporations repeat the process daily in the name of profit. Massive profit allows Big Coal to wield incredible financial influence over lobbyists and government officials in both parties, rewrite environmental protection laws, avoid lawsuits and eliminate more than 40,000 mining jobs, all while claiming to be a miner’s best friend. As our energy needs increase, so does Big Coal’s control over our future. This fact and a belief that America was founded on the democratic principal that no individual or corporation owns the air and water and we all share the responsibility of protecting it, drives these patriotic citizens and their supporters from outside of Appalachia, like Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., to keep fighting.

A passionate and personal tale that honors the extraordinary power of ordinary Americans when they fight for what they believe in, THE LAST MOUNTAIN shines a light on America’s energy needs and how those needs are being supplied. It is a fight for our future that affects us all.

Written, directed and produced by Bill Haney, an award-winning documentary filmmaker and founder and president of the eco-housing start-up, Blu Homes, THE LAST MOUNTAIN was co-written and edited by Peter Rhodes and produced by Clara Bingham and Eric Grunebaum. Narrated by William Sadler, the film features original music by composer Claudio Ragazzi and includes the song “Your Control” by Crooked Fingers and Neko Case.

Michigan Mining - Rio Tinto fueled a war in Bougainville due to its destructive mining activities in which it is being accused of genocide and war crimes under the U.S. Alien Tort Statute. Now the country is about to adopt world historic legislation that recognizes traditional landowners as co-mineral rights owners. Rio Tinto is buying up minerals rights in Michigan. Energy Bridge of Destruction

The environmental concerns of Anishinaabe activists regarding Enbridge were not unfounded. Enbridge oil spills affected, and continue to affect, the homelands and ceded lands of the Anishinaabe. According to Enbridge company data collected by the Polaris Institute, a Canadian think tank, Enbridge pipelines have spilled 804 times since 1999 and leaked 6.8 million gallons of oil. In Minnesota, there were 57 Enbridge spills from 2000 to 2009 with $36 million in property damage.

Proposed Wisconsin mining law: Economic boost or environmental blight? Its catastrophic! #IdleNoMore #BadRiver | IDLE NO MORE WISCONSIN | Scoop.it
Sarah LittleRedfeather Kalmanson's insight:

The message is, "This is Wisconsin mining law: this could be coming to a town near you," Wiggins said last week.

Given the unusual difficulty of mining in the Penokee area, where Wiggins said the iron ore is tilted and difficult to reach, requiring many tons of wasted rock, he has started to suspect that the mining industry is trying to score a victory in his remote, impoverished area of the state in order to gain a legal foothold for other future projects.

Wiggins and Manley each spoke in Milwaukee this month to members of the Milwaukee Rotary Club.

At the end of the [Iron County Mining Impact Comittee] meeting, during public comment period, Leslie Kolesar, chair of the committee, which by law, is supposed to be in an “adversarial” relationship with the mining company, said something to the effect of, "I have not read the new mining bill, it’s much too complicated." This from the person who has been campaigning for more than a year for passage of that bill, from a person who made videos for the Wisconsin Mining Association (at county taxpayer expense) while wearing her Wisconsin Mining Association tee shirt, who absolutely “glowed” while posing with our governor at the signing ceremony, and, who seems, sadly, to have absolutely no concept of “conflict of interest.”

Minnesota taconite health report due in April | 82 Iron Rangers have died mesothelioma Duluth, Minnesota

Minnesota taconite health report due in April | 82 Iron Rangers have died mesothelioma Duluth, Minnesota | IDLE NO MORE WISCONSIN | Scoop.it
Peer-reviewed results from the University of Minnesota study into why many Iron Rangers are dying of a rare lung disease will be made public in April.
Sarah LittleRedfeather Kalmanson's insight:

FACTS ABOUT TACONITE MINES.

Researchers in the nearly $5 million Minnesota Taconite Workers Health Study said Tuesday they will hold a public meeting at 3 p.m. April 12 at the Mountain Iron Community Center to explain the conclusions reached in the effort that started in 2008.

At least 82 Iron Rangers have died in recent years from mesothelioma, which often doesn’t appear until 30 to 40 years after initial exposure to asbestos fibers. The lung disease is always fatal and its only cause is exposure to asbestos or similar fibers.

It’s estimated that about 80,000 workers have been involved in iron ore mining since the first operations began in Minnesota in the late 1800s. Researchers are focusing on the roughly 46,000 people born since 1920 who worked in the production of taconite, which hasbeen mined and processed from iron ore in Minnesota since the 1950s.

Last June, in the most recent update on the study, researchers revealed that the study confirmed a 300 percent higher rate of mesothelioma on the Iron Range than among the general population in Minnesota. That report also noted that Iron Rangers have about 20 percent more lung cancer and 11 percent more heart disease than the general population.
