Indian Tribal Elders Hold Drum Ceremony Opposing Iron Mine - #NoPenokeeMine #IdleNoMore

Indian Tribal Elders Hold Drum Ceremony Opposing Iron Mine - #NoPenokeeMine #IdleNoMore | IDLE NO MORE WISCONSIN | Scoop.it

"Native American tribal elders from Bad River and Red Cliff held a drum ceremony this weekend calling upon the spirits to offer guidance in their fight against a proposed iron mine in northern Wisconsin."

It was then time to sing, with DePerry ad-libbing songs he says are borrowed from the spirits.

“One of the things that I’ve been hearing — that the drum was talking about — is we’ve got to stop the ignorance, the disrespect, the dishonor and the displaying of ownership because you know, we don’t call it ownership, we call it sharing: we call this land our home.”

DePerry says with these ceremonies non-native people can experience how sacred nature is to them and why they fear how the mine might affect them.

Bad River Tribal Elder Bing Lemieux says the spirits told him in a dream to make this drum to protect his community from the mine.

“We were told to make this and this is how we fight now. We’re calling in more than us and we do have other people now who are beginning to think like us and wanting to take care of our environment rather than tear it up.

Gogebic Taconite applies for preliminary mine permit - crews plan to drill into bedrock and create a 2.36-inch diameter hole

Gogebic Taconite applies for preliminary mine permit - crews plan to drill into bedrock and create a 2.36-inch diameter hole | IDLE NO MORE WISCONSIN | Scoop.it

A mining company that successfully pushed major changes in the state's iron mining laws formally sought approval on Thursday to conduct exploratory drilling on the site of a proposed iron ore mine.

"According to the company's application, crews will drill into bedrock and create a 2.36-inch diameter hole. Rock and water-table samples will be taken. If the DNR approves the permit, Coakley said the company will still likely have to wait for conditions to dry out. Heavy, late spring snows have slowed the company's plans this spring. The DNR has established a website on the project to provide updates on the project.

Sarah LittleRedfeather Kalmanson's insight:

Can Cath Stepp and Wis. DNR be trusted? Drilling into the rocks, will they be clearing away lands, and trees to disrupt a balance of things? Despite the Tribal Sovernighty and exercising their Treaty Rights in opposition as it effects the lands and waters of Bad River tribe watershed, they are going for it. Eau Claire (WQOW) - The debate about a proposed iron ore mine in northern Wisconsin always seems to come back to two things:  the impact on the economy vs. the environment.  As WQOW News 18 examines Gogebic Taconite's plans, we're hearing what supporters and opponents say they stand to gain or lose depending on the fate of that mine.

(This is the first story in a WQOW News 18 series called, "Mine of Information.")

Sarah LittleRedfeather Kalmanson's insight:

Frank Koehn fights to protect the natural waters and habitat of this region.

"It's water.  It all comes back to water.  We need that water to sustain life and that's what's at risk here is our water," says Koehn. The DNR says mines can use water at more than 70 gallons per minute.

SIX! Oil Spills in One Week: 'Accidents' or Business as Usual? #idlenomore no #tarsands #keystone #exxon #enbridge | IDLE NO MORE WISCONSIN | Scoop.it

UPDATE: Since publication of this story this morning, yet another oil spill has come across the wire - a CP Rail spill from a derailment in northern Ontario - raising the total of spills this past week to SIX.

Let's review the record over the last week:

•  This past friday, ExxonMobil's Pegasus Pipeline coated the streets of Mayflower, Arkansas with what CNN describes as a "smelly, asphalt-like crude" (i.e. diluted bitumen from the Alberta Tar Sands - the same kind the proposed Keystone XL would carry). These photos illustrate the effects of the spill on the sleepy Little Rock suburb - see the viral video captured by a local resident below.

• Enbridge was back at it again last week, with the fourth recorded spill in two months along its Norman Wells Pipeline through the Northwest Territories. The company has leaked an estimated million litres of oil since February, 2011, from this one pipeline, prompting the National Energy Board to order an engineering assessment of the chronically malfunctioning line.

• Meanwhile, back at the Alberta Tar Sands, Suncor was dealing with (and furiously downplaying) a leak from one of its massive waste ponds into the Athabasca River. This comes on the heels of a leaked memo to Conservative Resources Minister Joe Oliver, which acknowledged routine spillage from these ponds throughout the Tar Sands.

• Over the weekend, Michigan was hit with another spill - this time up to 500 gallons of hydraulic oil spilled into the Lansing Grand Riverduring an equipment malfunction at a local utility.

• For those who would look to rail as an alternative to pipelines for transporting oil, there was the derailment last week of a CP Rail train, spilling an estimated 30,000 gallons of its crude cargo in western Minnesota.

Investigate the elimination of the Indian Heritage Program - #IdleNoMore @OLBLlightBrigade | IDLE NO MORE WISCONSIN | Scoop.it

The Dismantling of the Indian Heritage Program

After nearly 40 years of operation, the Seattle Public Schools (SPS) announced the closure of the Indian Heritage Middle College program, a.k.a. Indian Heritage, located at the Wilson-Pacific School, 1330 N. 90th Street, Seattle, WA.

Indian Heritage was started in 1974 as a result of the Indian Education Act of 1972 and with the efforts of many visionary Native community members. Under the leadership of Robert Eaglestaff, Indian Heritage was a vibrant, visible, robust alternative school serving over 130 Native youth. Indian Heritage was originally dedicated to support the unique academic and cultural needs of our urban Native learners. Their mission was to provide quality Native-focused curriculum, instruction, support services, and community engagement to urban Native learners.

By 1992, the success of Indian Heritage could not be denied. Not only did Indian Heritage graduate every student, but graduates also enrolled in post-secondary or vocational school. Plans were being made to expand the program from a 6-12 grade to a K-12. All this changed after the death of Robert Eaglestaff in 1996, and the school was never the same. Indian Heritage became Indian Heritage Middle College program in 2000.

Since then, systemic deterioration was underway at the hands of SPS district administrators, resulting in the complete dismantling of the Indian Heritage program. Last year district leadership made the abrupt announcement to eliminate the school and proceeded to reassign Native instructors and students to other sites, effectively cutting the thread binding Native students to the program. -- read and learn more

Biden Comments Suggest He Opposes Keystone, Encouraging Critics - Hear that @BarackObama #IdleNoMore #NoKXL | IDLE NO MORE WISCONSIN | Scoop.it
A Sierra Club volunteer in South Carolina said Vice President Joe Biden appeared to indicate his opposition to TransCanada Corp.

Erich Pica, president of the Washington-based environmental group Friends of the Earth, said in a written statement, “Vice President Biden is to be commended for his blunt talk.”

Michael Brune, executive director of the San Francisco- based environmental group, also issued a statement and said that Biden’s comments were encouraging.

Critics say Keystone will exacerbate climate change by promoting development of the Alberta oil sands, which releases more greenhouse gases than other most production of more conventional crude oil.

Biden’s office referred to a March 2012 interview in which Biden said the decision “will be made in an environmentally sound basis” after a process is completed.

“The Vice President has made his views known on this issue and his views haven’t changed,” according to a statement from his office.

Arkansas Attorney General Keeping Exxon Honest - #tarsands #idlenomore @maddow - special diapers for oil

Arkansas Attorney General Keeping Exxon Honest

Dustin McDaniel, Arkansas Attorney General, talks with Rachel Maddow about the pressure he's keeping on Exxon to hold them accountable for the oil pipeline rupture that has polluted the town of Mayflower, Arkansas - particularly necessary given the power they exert over the spill scene.

Sarah LittleRedfeather Kalmanson's insight:

These are not paper towels ... due to the epidemic influenza these are diapers to collect dirty oil diarrhea with no hopes for injection of medicate treatment. If its a legitimate spill, we have ways to exxon it and clean it up?

Right now, there is a major oil spill clean-up happening in Mayflower, Arkansas. Over 12,000 barrels of oil have surfaced from a leak in an Exxon Mobil pipeline carrying tar sands oil from Canada, very similar to the proposed Keystone XL pipeline.

In addition to the unfolding environmental tragedy, media have had difficulties accessing information on the cleanup effort. One of the reasons for this is likely because access largely runs through Exxon Mobil employees who have a vested interest in keeping the media out of the loop.

The public and media deserve access to this oil spill. Please sign the petition to Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and Acting Director of the Environmental Protection Agency Bob Perciasepe demanding transparency and independence in media access to the Mayflower spill site. We will deliver the signatures to their offices.

BREAKING! Third major oil spill in a week: Shell pipeline breaks in Texas RT USA #idlenomore #tarsands

BREAKING! Third major oil spill in a week: Shell pipeline breaks in Texas RT USA #idlenomore #tarsands | IDLE NO MORE WISCONSIN | Scoop.it

Thousands of gallons of oil have spilled from a pipeline in Texas, the third accident of its kind in only a week.

Shell Pipeline, a unit of Royal Dutch Shell Plc, shut down their West Columbia, Texas, pipeline last Friday after electronic calculations conducted by the US National Response Center showed that upwards of 700 barrels had been lost, amounting to almost 30,000 gallons of crude oil.

By Monday, Shell spokespeople said inspectors found “no evidence” of an oil leak, but days later it was revealed that a breach did occur.

Representatives with the US Coast Guard confirmed to Dow Jones on Thursday that roughly 50 barrels of oil spilled from a pipe near Houston, Texas and entered a waterway that connects to the Gulf of Mexico.

Meanwhile, though, rescue works in Arkansas have been getting their hands dirty responding to an emergency there. A rupture in ExxonMobil's Pegasus pipeline late last week send thousands of barrels of oil into the small town of Mayflower, around 25 miles outside of Little Rock. Authorities evacuated more than 20 homes in response, and by this Thursday roughly 19,000 barrels had been recovered.

Another incident in Canada this week caused an estimated 400 barrels — or roughly 16,800 gallons — of oil to be compromised in northern Ontario when a train derailed. Originally, Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd said only four barrels were lost in the accident.

Sarah LittleRedfeather Kalmanson's insight:

BREAKING!!! 3rd major oil spill THIS WEEK in Texas again. And, SHOCKER Oil company says found "no evidence," of an oil leak but "DAYS" later evidence shows YES IT DID! -- "Coast Guard Petty Officer Steven Lehman said that Shell had dispatched clean-up crews that were working hard to correct any damage to Vince Bayou, a small waterway that runs for less than 20 miles from the Houston area into a shipping channel that opens into the Gulf." - -So why is pipelines, expansions, and Keystone a good idea? Something tells me Mother says, NO!
