G-Tac Bulk Sampling Tyler Forks Penokee Hills Michael Matusewic

See the streams that are within steps of the bulk sampling mining site that flows toTyler Forks near Upson, Wisconsin. Tyler Forks flows into the Bad River Watershed, which flows into Lake Superior. Poisons from a taconite mine at this site will end up poisoning Lake Superior. Video taken September 17, 2013. It is wetter here most of the year due to snow, snow melts, and Spring rains.

Report: WI mining bill would slash money for environment

Report: WI mining bill would slash money for environment | IDLE NO MORE WISCONSIN | Scoop.it
New numbers show the controversial mining bill would mean taking away tens of millions of dollars that would otherwise be used for recycling and environmental protection.
Sarah LittleRedfeather Kalmanson's insight:

WAKE UP! - "The bill would reduce those fees to about 3 cents per ton. The report says the move means Gogebic Taconite wouldn't have to pay the state about $171 million annually it would otherwise owe."

I was born at Tohatchi, New Mexico and raised at Leupp, Arizona. My skin is white but I am no sister to this fool McCain. He needs to be striped of all his power. As has always been in this country there is no thought or love for anything or anyone but the big business. I believe if we look this fool has his greedy hands in these plants so he can make even more money that he doesn't need. Put wind turbines and solar power harms no one. I shed many tears for the people who were my family there on that reservation. I am sorry for what these white fools do.

Billionaire Battles Native Americans Over Iron Ore Mine - Its not Iron, its SULFIDE OPEN PIT WHOLE #INM | IDLE NO MORE WISCONSIN | Scoop.it
Chris Cline made a fortune in coal mines; now he's vying against the Chippewa to dig a giant iron ore mine in Wisconsin.
Sarah LittleRedfeather Kalmanson's insight:

The "proposed by Gogebic Taconite, which Cline bought a few years ago, the mine would be built in the far northern reaches of Wisconsin near the town of Mellen, in an area crossed by rivers and streams that flow north into Lake Superior," would indefinitely pollute the Bad River Watershed, Kakagon Sloughs, and kill the Wild rice (Manoomin), and fish, and plants and trees surrounded by started with blasting a HUGE (world's largest taconite) HOLE into Mother Earth = #GENOCIDE. #IdleNoMore! #NoPenokeeMine #Ojibwe #TreatyRights

"Budget committee to take up Wis. mining bill" Gov. Walker & WI GOP offers GENOCIDE for the Ojibwes #IdleNoMore | IDLE NO MORE WISCONSIN | Scoop.it
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The Legislature’s finance committee is poised to vote next week on a divisive bill that would overhaul Wisconsin’s iron mining regulations. ...
Sarah LittleRedfeather Kalmanson's insight:

Gov. Walker and Wisconsin's GOP is going to go down in History as another Broken Rainbow who destroyed the lives of the Ojibwe People, and Destroyed the Waters of Lake Superior. Goes beyond SHAME! They can stand with Sen. McCain (including Pres. Ford) who sold out and destroyed the Hop, and Navajo peoples for Coal and Uranium Mines. Semu Huaute, a Chumash Grandfather, belongs to the same generation as the famous “Rolling Thunder,” who he shared a big part of his life stated back in the 70's, where today, has caused climate changes, and water droughts and shortages. - HE CALLED IT OUT, and NOW WALKER and his GOP Members will play a role in our demise over a freakin mine, for money, which will lead to GENOCIDE!

Broken Rainbow - http://youtu.be/0iN3zdpdgvY

On December 1974 Congress passed Public Law 93-531 "The Navajo-Hopi Land Settlement Act". It authorized the partitioning of the Joint Use Area (JUA) and established the Navajo-Hopi. Indian Relocation Commission (NHIRC) which moved Navajo people from the reservation lands. Countless of the most traditionally and culturally intact Dineh (Navajo) people were forced to re-locate to cities like Shiprock and Tuba City.

"Their CRIMES are being EXPOSED!"

"The following information is given as presented by the International Tribunal Into Crimes of Church and State. The crimes are much greater than outlined here. But this information is documented by witness testimony and evidence presented at the court proceedings. The schools listed are only the schools where they have documented evidence. There are many victims and witnesses to crimes that have been committed who could yet come forward and present further evidence and testimony to crimes committed against themselves and others. This is an ongoing investigation, but this is the documented evidence presented on November 6, 2012. The links to the proceedings are in the "Source" material listed at the end of this note, which includes video testimony of witnesses, victims and also of exhibits entered as evidence. It is important to distinguish facts from fiction... While many of the accusations made in Ditto's link are based on historical records, there are falsehoods thrown into the posting as well. The photograph depicting human skulls with the caption that reads below it stating that this is from a mass grave discovered at a Residential school in Alberta, Canada is actually a photograph taken of a mass grave in Syria and was originally Published in National Geographic Magazine. This is the type of hype that this issue can no longer afford. The horrible consequences of the abuses at Residentiall Schools is bad enough without the supporters of a con artist photoshopping the crimes for shock value.

Proposed Minnesota copper mine reports progress on environmental issues | Duluth News Tribune | #IdleNoMore #protectmanoomin

Proposed Minnesota copper mine reports progress on environmental issues | Duluth News Tribune | #IdleNoMore #protectmanoomin | IDLE NO MORE WISCONSIN | Scoop.it

Company officials say the latest advancements include:

Reductions in sulfur dioxide, mercury and greenhouse gas emissions like carbon dioxide at the processing plant at the former LTV Taconite facility.

Groundwater and surface seepage at the mine will be captured using an in-ground containment system.

All water discharged from the project will be treated using reverse osmosis. The company in October announced it had successfully tested a large scale reverse osmosis system to reduce sulfate in water that leaves their operations and before it goes into the environment. The company said the treatment system will reduce sulfate levels to comply with the state’s existing sulfate standard for wild rice, currently 10 parts per million.

Sarah LittleRedfeather Kalmanson's insight:

Minnesota is NO A MODEL MINING STATE!

From an associate, and Robert DesJarlait: "Two effective messages for us are (1) the site will be polluted for thousands of years and (2) it will need treatment and maintenance for the entire time. Now Polymet is saying they need a very expensive form of water treatment. Is the state of Minnesota ready to permit a site that will be polluted for thousands of years? Are we ready to take on the risk that Minnesota taxpayers will be left to pay for it?"

Polymet's EIS states water treatment will be required for 2000 years. Bob Tammen has pointed out that the process of Reverse Osmosis (RO) captures sulfates and other toxins in solid or liquidized form - solid form can be buried or liquid form can be injected back into the earth. Either method does not solve the problem of the waste, since the waste will decompose in the ground and leach into groundwaters. Also note that the RO process that Polymet has tested with is a small scale model. The water treatment plant required for their mine will have to be huge. In the words of one person: "It will have to be Cadillac facility."

Robert DesJarlait's curator insight, February 11, 2013 8:41 PM

This, of course, is not news in Indian Country. We've always known this. In decolonizing ourselves, we've had to go back to the historical trauma that began in boarding schools to understand the ethnocide our great-grandparents, our grandparents, and our parents were subjected to. And we've had to deal with intergenerational trauma and how that has affected us in terms of our addictions and behavioral problems. Then we've had to relearn the traditions of our ancestors and integrate those principals and morals into our lives. Decolonization is a process of healing from the genocide and ethnocide of the past. First we heal ourselves (which in itself is a life journey), then we heal our families, then our communities, and lastly, our nations.
