Wisconsin’s Mining Sellout - Deeply flawed mining... #NoPenokeeMine #WATER #idlenomore #BadRiver | IDLE NO MORE WISCONSIN | Scoop.it

“We have a plethora of defenses in our war chest...wrap your minds around the fact that this is not going to happen.”
Bad River Tribal Chairman Mike Wiggins, repeating at a
Lawrence University forum what he had said to Democratic
legislators and the lone Republican holdout, Sen. Dale Schultz
of Richland Center, on the proposed open pit mine in
the Penokee Mountains.

Sarah LittleRedfeather Kalmanson's insight:

"Yet mainstream media has been dismissive of the report. Bjornerud names a major chain that owns many area dailies." - The mainstream media should be ASHAMED of themselves for not reporting the truth and facts. The mainstream media themselves are bought and paid for. They didn't soundbite the term, "Controversial Bill ... Relaxes Mining Regulations," until the  day of signing it into law. With that meme, Wisconsinites would have questioned the motives.

I was born at Tohatchi, New Mexico and raised at Leupp, Arizona. My skin is white but I am no sister to this fool McCain. He needs to be striped of all his power. As has always been in this country there is no thought or love for anything or anyone but the big business. I believe if we look this fool has his greedy hands in these plants so he can make even more money that he doesn't need. Put wind turbines and solar power harms no one. I shed many tears for the people who were my family there on that reservation. I am sorry for what these white fools do.

#BadRiver Chippewa could have say in Gogebic iron ore mine - #IdleNoMore #WATER #wimines - NO MEANS NO | IDLE NO MORE WISCONSIN | Scoop.it
The future of an iron ore mine in northern Wisconsin could be influenced by a tribe that opposes the project and has received authority from the federal government to regulate water pollution beyond the reservation.

Nationally, Monette said that tribes are flexing their muscles.

The most notable case: In Albuquerque, N.M., the Isleta Pueblo forced the city to upgrade its sewage treatment system beyond federally required standards after the tribe's limits were backed by a favorable federal appeals court ruling in 1996. The tribe live 6 miles downstream from Albuquerque's wastewater outfall.

The Bad River Chippewa will vigorously exert its water pollution authority, according to chairman Mike Wiggins Jr.

Sarah LittleRedfeather Kalmanson's insight:

NO MEANS NO, NO MINE. - State Wisconsin Legislation, needs to honor the treaties, and soverignty rights. This is a human rights issue, and it affects all Wisconsinites. - This is just not an Indian issues anymore, its all our issue - We have the right to clean air, and clean water to live a life of quality, to sustain life and pursuit of happiness.

"The wetlands of the Bad River comprise 40% of all coastal wetlands of Lake Superior, according to documents filed by the tribe in their application for water authority."

"The 16,000-acre Kakagon and Bad River sloughs, home to the largest natural wild rice bed on the Great Lakes, were recognized last year as internationally important by the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, a global environmental treaty."

""Our ability to regulate water is paramount - it's unbelievably critical," Wiggins said. "It cuts directly to the trust responsibility of the United States government with our treaties and to our ancestral connections."

Mining in Wisconsin: 'Everybody wants a decent living' : Wsj - #IdleNoMore #BadRiver #WATER #wimine | IDLE NO MORE WISCONSIN | Scoop.it
MELLEN — For many in this small city, the $1.5-billion iron ore mine proposed in Ashland and Iron counties by Gogebic Taconite — and the 700 jobs the company promises over the operation's 35-year first phase — offer a tantalizing way out of a long...
Sarah LittleRedfeather Kalmanson's insight:

Balanced journalism here ...? If you go to the labor of statistics, you will find that ONLY engineers make anything remotely close to $60,000 a year, not laborers or miners, Engineers and Safety Engineers make that kind of money. Are there such engineers skilled and trained in Hurley or Mellen for example that are unemployed? Highly doubt that. Its greenwash kool-aid spreading false hopes, which is CRUEL.

"We hear the jobs, jobs, jobs mantra," said Mike Wiggins, Jr., chairman of the Tribal Council of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, whose reservation is just downriver of the proposed mine. "But jobs are just a small sliver of all that should be considered here."

Wiggins said those jobs and any economic boost have to be balanced against potential environmental damage, such as mercury pollution of fish and degradation of the Bad River, which nourishes the tribe's rice beds and which originates in the Penokee Hills just south of the proposed mine site. The band opposes construction of the mine.

Sen. Ron Johnson calls Violence Against Women bill unconstitutional - JSOnline | IDLE NO MORE WISCONSIN | Scoop.it
Washington, D.C. -- In a statement Wednesday, GOP Sen.
Sarah LittleRedfeather Kalmanson's insight:

Its unconstituional to permit, and continue to allow murder, and rape without justice or prosecution, don't you think?

- Tea Party elected officials appear to be owning up their true motives, which is the encourage to deny the Tribal Nations to have their Soverignty Rights; hence down the kick to the road; removal of environmental protection standards as well. - pride partisan before protections.

- Start here to deny Soverignty in the Violence Against Women Act to include tribal expansion provisions to protect and seek justice of Native Women murdered or raped on Indian Lands which one long ago, was too many.

- Man up Sen. Ron Johnson, and put the shame and pride aside to protect our mothers and daughters.

A deluded cruel perspective - Wisconsin tribe threatens Walker jobs project - The fact is #WATER | IDLE NO MORE WISCONSIN | Scoop.it
Sarah LittleRedfeather Kalmanson's insight:

The conversation ends when we discuss, WATER, end of story.

“Ground water aquifer contamination; you can’t engineer your way out of that. You can engineer processing plants and we see that with Culligan and Coke and everybody else selling water – privatization of water well, you can engineer that; but for our home and our people - what is essentially a basic human right; poisoning or contaminating the ground water aquifer in our mind is non negotiable and unacceptable.”

Wiggins says the tribe will use every tool it has – from tribal to fundamental human rights - to protect its air and water.

Defending Land and Water Rights in Michigan's Upper Peninsula
Sarah LittleRedfeather Kalmanson's insight:
Reclaiming our sacred placesPosted on January 1, 2013 by aunteedahlia | Leave a comment

In solidarity with indigenous peoples seeking to protect and reclaim their sacred places around the world and the Idle No More movement, we gathered at Eagle Rock on December 28, 2012.

We gathered in support of Chief Theresa Spence and our brothers and sisters in Canada, across Turtle Island, and down to South America. We prepared a fire and shared prayers, blessings, songs, and inspiration for our lands, waters, sacred places, Mother Earth, and the future.

Eagle Rock, also known as the Home of the White Wolf and the High Place, has been a sacred place to the Anishinaabe and other peoples for centuries. In 2010, Keweenaw Bay Anishinaabe Ogichidaag were arrested at our sacred site to make way for a mine. Known as the “Eagle Mine,” one of the world’s largest mining company’s, Rio Tinto, blasted a mine portal directly into Eagle Rock. Despite legal challenges, the company has constructed a mile long tunnel to a highly reactive sulfide copper/nickel ore body they hope to exploit by 2014 beneath a river of Lake Superior.

The Anishinaabe and their supporters who care for this land and do not wish to see the threshold of the world’s fresh water poisoned, have continued to gather and pray at and near Eagle Rock – amidst its strength and in the face of greed and destruction.

Well, that was my thought too when I read EIS back in 2011, and based upon the changes of our economy and industry trends related to metal minerals, would you not think we would need an updated EIS that is concrete and detailed based upon these fantasties of mining jobs creation? Based upon advanced technology supposedly in new mining, how many human operators would that entail to mine. I see many mining companies laying off as to the use of the machines; and less need for human employees.

Sarah LittleRedfeather Kalmanson's insight:

• The bill does nothing to guarantee that jobs will be created for Wisconsinites.
• The bill opens the entire state to mining and plays favorites by placing the needs of the mining industry above those of every other economic sector.
• The bill forces other businesses to subsidize mining companies’ profits.
• The bill does nothing to mitigate the boom-and-bust cycle that Wisconsin experienced during the early days of the timber industry and earlier mining enterprises.
• The bill exposes taxpayers to costly lawsuits.

Defenders of the Land: Indigenous Peoples have clear demands for real change | #IdleNoMore | IDLE NO MORE WISCONSIN | Scoop.it
Sarah LittleRedfeather Kalmanson's insight:

#IDLENOMORE Defenders of the Land, a network of Indigenous communities and activists in land struggle across Canada, including Elders and youth, women and men, dedicated to building a fundamental movement for Indigenous rights, was founded at a historic meeting in Winnipeg from November 12-14, 2008. The network organized educational Indigenous Sovereignty Weeks across the country for three successive years, and issued a call for a National Day of Action on June 24, 2010, during the G-20 in Toronto, which saw a march attended by 10,000 people.

In 2008, Defenders of the Land developed a basis of unity and set of demands with the help of a broad range of land-based Indigenous activists. These demands – now slightly updated – are deeply in tune with the Idle No More movement and could serve as a powerful unifying force for this new movement.
