Road to Grammar is a free resource featuring quizzes, games, and lessons for English language learners. Visitors to Road to Grammar will find grammar quizzes. Most of the quizzes provide students with instant feedback. Part of the feedback that students receive on the quizzes they take includes explanations why an answer is correct or incorrect. Before taking the quizzes visitors can work through a series of practice activities.
In today’s selection we curated for you some useful apps and web tools to use to add text to pictures and create classroom posters. Students can use these tools for different educational purposes including visually explaining a given topic, creating greeting cards, designing inspirational quote posters and many more.
At the World Wide Developer Conference last week, Apple introduced their all new RSS reader app called News. In all honesty, I see it as a good move on their part–it makes sense. By offering a free news aggregator that automatically is included in iOS 9, iPad owners are much less likely to go outside the Apple ecosystem in search of a an alternative. This move to provide a more comprehensive, all encompassing experience on iOS will be a good hook for new iPad and iPhone users. However, after talking with some current users, many of them were not as impressed.
Will the News app be a viable alternative to much more established and successful RSS readers like Feedly and Flipboard? Yes, and no. Traditional RSS reader advocates will likely stay with their current choices. However, new iPad users looking for a way to consume content more easily, and all in one place will likely find News to be the first and perhaps their last choice since it will be pre-installed on their device. Never underestimate the power of convenience.
After our collaborative How To writing project, everyone was quick to get started on their own “expert” stories. Making lists of things we’re experts at helps generate ideas, then the stories start to flow!
We’ve published our writing several different ways this year, so I offered an idea menu of apps to publish with to my class. This is by no means a comprehensive list of tools. If you're looking for some new books to read this summer, take a look at the Open Library which is a part of the Internet Archive. The Open Library is a collection of more than one million free ebook titles. The collection is cataloged by a community of volunteer online librarians. The ebooks in the Open Library can be read online, downloaded to your computer, read on Kindle and other ereader devices, and embedded into other sites. Some of the ebooks, like Treasure Island, can also be listened to through the Open Library.
Because Millennials and digital natives live in a creation-based world, apps like Adobe Voice, Thinglink, and Pages promote higher-order thinking, encourage collaboration, and invite real-world learning.

A few weeks ago, I was brainstorming a lesson with a 7th grade Life Science teacher at my school. She had a unit on symbiosis coming up and she wanted to assess the students in a new way. We bounced around a lot of ideas: green screens, music videos, cartooning sites but what we landed on was StoryKit. StoryKit is a free app from the folks at the International Children's Digital Library (which is a great resource in itself if you aren't already familiar with it!).

The New York Public Library’s Biblion: World’s Fair app puts the wonder of the 1939-1940 World’s Fair on your iPad. Through the app you can view images, videos, and documents all about the World’s Fair. All of the media in the app is arranged into thematic stories. These stories showcase the innovations that were on display in 1940 as well as the predictions for the future. Plenty of historical context is provided through the stories to help readers understand why the innovations on display were significant.
