The New York Public Library just released a treasure trove of digitized public domain images, everything from epic poetry from the 11th century to photographs of used car lots in Columbus, Ohio from the 1930s. Over 180,000 manuscripts, maps, photographs, sheet music, lithographs, postcards, and other images were released online Wednesday in incredibly high resolution, and are available to download using the library's user-friendly visualization tool. It's a nostalgist's dream come true.

10 different approaches to creating Digital Learning Content

10 different approaches to creating Digital Learning Content | idevices for special needs | Scoop.it
Over the past few months, I’ve written a series of posts over on the Flipped Learning Network web site that offer a wealth of different tools and techniques that can be used to create digital learning content for flipped or blended teaching and learning. I want to be sure that EmergingEdTech subscribers get a chance to check these out. While there may be some pretty obvious and standard tools and techniques here, there are also some fun and unique approaches.

Many of the foundational skills associated with social emotional learning (SEL; see our feature on p. 22), such as the ability to identify and process emotions, being aware of oneself and others, controlling impulses, appreciating and embracing different perspectives, demonstrating empathy, building relationships, and making good decisions, are developed in the first years—during preschool and the early elementary grades. SAS CodeSnaps: A New Way to Code!

SAS CodeSnaps: A New Way to Code! | idevices for special needs | Scoop.it

"Some people think that K-12 computer science requires a large budget, a classroom full of tablets and robots, and an experienced tech teacher. We are pleased to dispel those myths--and introduce you to SAS CodeSnaps!

CodeSnaps is a collaborative coding environment requiring only one iPad and one robot. The app takes advantage of tangible, printed coding blocks, allowing students to prepare programs together on a shared work surface without a device. After students scan the blocks with the app, commands can be executed on the connected robot (compatible robots include Sphero, Ollie, SPRK, and SPRK+)."

Why Spatial Reasoning Is Crucial For Early Math Education

Why Spatial Reasoning Is Crucial For Early Math Education | idevices for special needs | Scoop.it
When Nicole Thomson first heard about the importance of teaching spatial reasoning and geometry in her kindergarten math curriculum she had already been teaching for several years. Her teacher training program hadn’t mentioned these skills, and yet at a professional development session for math teachers a group of researchers from the University of Toronto explained the large body of research that ties spatial reasoning skills to future success in math and reading. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) recommends that spatial reasoning should be a large focus of preK – 8th grade math education.

How to create your own iPad recording booth for the classroom.

How to create your own iPad recording booth for the classroom. | idevices for special needs | Scoop.it
The creative power of an iPad in the classroom is limitless with its ability for students to show their learning in a multitude of creative ways that look professional. My students love nothing more than to share their knowledge in the form of an iMovie or by using a digital storytelling tool such as Tellagami or Chatterpix or narrating a keynote presentation. But the number one issue we have in the classroom is the background noise when we record these presentations. There is nothing worse than having a fantastic visual product that is let down by poor audio quality, but in a noisy school situation that is a difficult proposition to overcome. So this year we are using our own homemade iPad recording booths.

This is a great idea. Sound is always an issue at our school when recording on iPads. You could even use regular boxes, cover them in cloth and experiment with different materials to line them with as part of a STEAM project.
