Keynote Guide

Keynote Guide | idevices for special needs | Scoop.it

"Created a guide for Keynote on the iPad. It is quite comprehensive and covers just about all the features of the app. As I point out in the guide one of the most powerful yet least utilised features is the creation of Hyperlinks. It is possible to create a Keynote presentation that is not linear and that all navigation is based on interactive hyperlinks. You can download the Keynote guide here. http://www.larkin.net.au/resources/keynote_guide.pdf ; "

iPhone 6 Plus vs. iPhone 6: The Best $100 You'll Ever Spend - Teaching with iPad

iPhone 6 Plus vs. iPhone 6: The Best $100 You'll Ever Spend - Teaching with iPad | idevices for special needs | Scoop.it
This post is for those considering an iPhone upgrade. Those of you who currently have an iPhone 5 or older are probably due for an upgrade with your provider. If you have already purchased an iPhone 6, it is great phone and upgrade from Apple's previous models. Please let us know what you think after reading this!

My colleague and good friend Matt Przybylski (@iphysed) and I love discussing Apple products. He has had the iPhone 6 plus since day 1 (almost 3 months ago!). I have had it for just over three weeks. We wanted to take the opportunity to share why we think the 6 plus is the better phone. Upon some discussion between Matt and I, here are some reasons why, if you are debating which iPhone to get next, the iPhone 6 Plus should be the one you get.

Coding for Kindergarteners - Edutopia

Coding for Kindergarteners - Edutopia | idevices for special needs | Scoop.it
Last year at this time, I was trying not to think about kindergarteners. I was still teaching ninth grade English and had just accepted a job teaching technology to K-5. I was excited about the challenge, and I knew that I'd bitten off more than I could chew.

Developing the tech curriculum challenged me to teach programming or at least computational thinking at each elementary grade level. Our school is mid-pivot in technology -- we're in our second year of a middle school 1:2 iPad program, our first year of having a cart of iPads available for elementary, and our last year of two PC labs for the students to use (next year we'll have only one lab). Knowing this, I wanted to design a program that mostly used tablet-based tools.

The idea of teaching children how to code is a great one.  Technology has rapidly changed the world and all of it stems from coding.  Just like most skills, the sooner its learned, the more time it can be mastered, and ultimately effectiveness is maximized.

6 Good iPad Apps to Turn Pictures Into Cartoons and Comics ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

6 Good iPad Apps to Turn Pictures Into Cartoons and Comics ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | idevices for special needs | Scoop.it
I spent sometime this weekend curating and working on the list of iPad apps below. These are apps that students can use to create beautiful cartoons to use in their multimedia projects or in activities that involve comic strips, digital storytelling, presentations and many more. All of these apps are easy to use and do not require any advanced technical skill. Some of the things students can do with these apps include: take pictures and turn them into cartoons, capture cartoon videos, draw cartoon sketches, customize and add different effects to pictures, convert photos into cartoon avatars, and many more.

Playing Outside iPad's Screen with Osmo - Learning in Hand with Tony Vincent

Playing Outside iPad's Screen with Osmo - Learning in Hand with Tony Vincent | idevices for special needs | Scoop.it
Osmo was created by young parents and encourages social interaction by expanding interaction with games to the area in front of an iPad. It does this by providing a white stand and a red mirror that works with iPad and iPad mini. The reflector lets the front-facing camera recognize what is placed in front of iPad. Something to know is that iPad must be removed from any case in order to fit into the stand.

Using iMovie App in Physical Education Lessons - November 2014

Using iMovie App in Physical Education Lessons - November 2014 | idevices for special needs | Scoop.it

This month I have been supporting the PE department with using the iPads to enhance their lessons and pupils to analyse skills. Last year Apple updated iMovie app to include features such as Split Screen, Freeze Frame, Video Speed etc. This year the update has made some of these features a little easier to find.

Split Screen: We have used this to compare videos of the same skill taken from two different angles. For example, a cricket bowling action.

Video Speed: We have used this by splitting part of a clip where the skill is most demonstrated and slowing it down.

Freeze Frame: We can stop a clip at any point and create a freeze frame. This freeze frame can be split at either end to create a separate clip and textual analysis added.

I would also like to say a big thank you for all the great feedback to the iPad Teachers App. We are only at the start of the content we can add to this so look out for the first update in mid December with even more ideas. Details of the app can be found at www.ipadteachers.co.uk

A higher-order thinker is a critical thinker. What are the attributes of a critical thinker? In The Miniature Guide to Critical Thinking Concepts and Tools, Richard Paul and Linda Elder describe a well-cultivated critical thinker as someone who:
raises vital questions and problems, formulating them clearly and precisely;gathers and assesses relevant information, using abstract ideas to interpret it effectively; comes to well-reasoned conclusions and solutions, testing them against relevant criteria and standards;thinks open-mindedly within alternative systems of thought, recognizing and assessing their assumptions, implications and practical consequences as need be; andcommunicates effectively with others in figuring out solutions to complex problems.

Using a few digital tools, students can create artifacts, record their thoughts about their work and share with the class. They can also review their classmates’ work and give feedback.
