Innovation, Complexity and Social Business – Part 2 | Social Enterprise Today

Innovation, Complexity and Social Business – Part 2 | Social Enterprise Today | Entrepreneuriat Social, Management & Créativité pour Entreprises sociales | Scoop.it
Laurence Bakayoko's insight:

A striking change of focus in the social business arena occurred during the last five years. Despite the fact that Andrew McAfee’s original definition specified its scope as «within companies, or between companies and their partners or customers», infant Enterprise 2.0 was mainly concerned by internal collaboration. The teaser from one of the major events of this early period, the Boston 2007 Enterprise 2.0 Conference, talked about “(…) the technologies and business practices that liberate the workforce from the constraints of legacy communication and productivity tools like email“.

The Need to Scale: Social Enterprises and Community Health

The Need to Scale: Social Enterprises and Community Health | Entrepreneuriat Social, Management & Créativité pour Entreprises sociales | Scoop.it
'The Need to Scale: Social Enterprises and Community Health' blog post by David Wilcox.
Laurence Bakayoko's insight:

“Community health workers: Now that is a profession that must be compensated.”

That is my paraphrase of Jeffrey Sachs’ response to the question I posed at the mHealth Summit about this issue. Investments in technology to support community health workers (CHWs) must be balanced with the need for volunteer CHWs -- which are still the majority in Africa — to be paid in order to have any hope of building a skilled professional corps of these life savers.

There is a lot of talk about succession planning in the nonprofit sector, but for the most part, it’s approached in the wrong way. The problem with traditional succession planning is that nonprofits take a too narrow view of nonprofit leadership.

What Africa & a Nonprofit Dev Summit Taught Me: Start with the User | Zerodivide

What Africa & a Nonprofit Dev Summit Taught Me: Start with the User | Zerodivide | Entrepreneuriat Social, Management & Créativité pour Entreprises sociales | Scoop.it

During my session, I shared my experiences from a year spent working to help roll out a mobile app in Kenya. The app was designed to help refugees find family members displaced by war. Users could establish a ‘Facebook-like’ profile and then search through other profiles to try to locate their lost loved ones.

It is a great idea in theory; however, I quickly learned that the app’s development phases hadn’t been all that inclusive of those actually meant to use it. As a result, cultural issues related to class, gender, nationality, tribe, language, religion and more made deployment more than challenging. And, there were other problems indicative of the development approach - the app was designed to be used on phones that most intended users didn’t have and networks they didn’t have access to. As you would imagine, these factors kept adoption rates painfully low.

Business Should Focus on Sociality, Not Social "Media"

Business Should Focus on Sociality, Not Social "Media" | Entrepreneuriat Social, Management & Créativité pour Entreprises sociales | Scoop.it
Would anyone care if your business died tomorrow?
Laurence Bakayoko's insight:

The majority of people worldwide wouldn't care if two thirds of brands disappeared tomorrow. Just 20 percent of brands are seen to have a notable positive impact on people's lives.

Those are two of the findings from Meaningful Brands, a little study we do at my Lab. And while I don't suggest you take them as hyperquantitative gospel, I do suggest: they point squarely to a broken relationship between companies and individuals — part of a larger break between people and institutions I've called a Great Splintering, a global breakdown of the industrial age social contract of more, bigger, faster, cheaper now — at any cost, including the planet, your town, the McJob once formerly known as your career, and the express train to nowheresville currently known as the future of everyone under the age of 35 and/or worth less than a few billion dollars.

Laurence Bakayoko's insight:

‘Tis the season to do good. You might not believe it if you’ve just come from the Mall, but the spirit of good is out there. Perhaps unexpectedly, good deeds and real social change are coming from business leaders who understand that success carries with it the opportunity to exercise social responsibility without the burden of government mandate.

Laurence Bakayoko's insight:
