What Effect Does Having Your Idea Stolen Have on Your Creativity? #IDEACHAT May 11 9a ET

What Effect Does Having Your Idea Stolen Have on Your Creativity? #IDEACHAT May 11 9a ET | #ideachat | Scoop.it

Photo of Wangling Soho Building by Zaha Hadid Architects

A Beijing building project by London-based architect Zaha Hadid – which was not even finished yet – was already being copied in Chongqing.  “Hadid herself seems a little more relaxed about the use of her work, provided the results contain a certain amount of innovation, saying ‘that could be quite exciting.’” –  Philippa Warr in “Architecture Pirates May Finish Copycat Building Before Original”

What effect does having your idea stolen have on your creativity?

“When the creative idea or design was stolen, the author’s dream was stolen too ... something that is part of that person has been stolen as well. It is their idea, and the solution that they found. It is something that came from within their mind and their being. What was created exists because the author exists and creates.  It is the heart of what a creative person is, and after their creation is stolen, they are left with wreckage, and with anger and fear.” – Linda Rash Pilkington in “Everything Can Be Stolen”

“There are two ways that idea-stealing can involve fear. First, there’s the writer who’s so afraid that someone will steal his idea that he never shares any of his work. On the other hand, there’s the writer who is so afraid of unknowingly taking someone else’s idea that she never writes anything at all.” – Gabriela Pereira in “Idea-Stealing”

“For years now, I have seen a normal and essential part of the creative process going underground and it makes me sad and, sometimes, outraged. This normal and essential creative process is called claiming your lineage.” – Jen Louden in “Claim your Lineage Proudly or Why Stealing Other People’s Stuff has Got to Stop”

Is there such a thing as an original idea?

“There are no original ideas. There are only original people.” – Barbara Grizzuti Harrison.

“Great artists steal.” – Pablo Picasso

“Steal Like an artist.” – Austin Kleon

“I wanted to hear music that had not yet happened, by putting together things that suggested a new thing which did not yet exist.” – Brian Eno.

“Sometimes I think everything I draw is just a combination of all of the millions and millions of drawings I’ve seen.” – Dash Shaw

Can ideas be owned?

“Share ownership of your ideas. The more people who lie awake in bed thinking about your idea, the better.” – Scott Belsky

“I don't want to hear ideas. I just want to see the execution.” – Derek Sivers

Join us for #ideachat with Jen Louden as our special guest on Saturday, May 11th at 9 am ET, and read her post:

“Claim your Lineage Proudly or Why Stealing Other People’s Stuff has Got to Stop” at http://jenniferlouden.com/claim-your-lineage-proudly/.

Some questions to think about:

What effect does having your idea stolen have on your creativity?

Is there such a thing as an original idea?

Does confronting someone who stole your idea make things better or worse?

Can ideas be owned?

Is the idea of attribution of ideas fading in the 21st century?

What are some modern rules to follow about other people’s ideas?

blogbrevity's insight:

Join us for #ideachat, a global salon of interesting creative people who convene monthly on Twitter!  This Saturday, May 11th, at 9 am ET with special guest Jen Louden.

Counterintuitive! Data Visualization of Myers-Briggs Personality Types in Twitter Bios

Counterintuitive! Data Visualization of Myers-Briggs Personality Types in Twitter Bios | #ideachat | Scoop.it
blogbrevity's curator insight, March 26, 10:38 AM

In case you missed our #ideachat discussion on Myers-Briggs personality types and Twitter, see the counterintuitive results in the data visualization OppoBoppo created. This data reflects those who have chosen to identify themselves with their Myers-Briggs type in their Twitter bio. Important to note: this data does not reflect the distribution of types on Twitter, but those who have "chosen to identify" themselves. What makes this counterintuitive is that more "I' rather than "E", and more "N" rather "S", types identified themselves by type.

Specifically, the largest number of people by type in their bio were "INFJ" and "INTJ". The type least likely to list in their bio were "ESFP" and "ESFJ".

How Twitter Chats Will Open Your Mind and Network - Forbes | #ideachat | #ideachat | Scoop.it

Innovation writer Juliet Barbara highlights #ideachat in Forbes and describes the network potential of Twitter Chats. "Twitter, in its ideal state, is a liquid network. It brings disparate people, organizations and ideas together in a sort of “primordial soup” of idea creation and sharing. ... Because of the diverse group of people a Twitter chat can bring together in an open, “liquid” environment, there’s potential for those serendipitous connections that just may complete an idea."

"Ideas for Social Good" #ideachat Aug. 11th | Guest Host David Hood

"Ideas for Social Good" #ideachat Aug. 11th | Guest Host David Hood | #ideachat | Scoop.it

This is a guest post by David Hood,  @davidahood  of @doingsomegood , who will be the guest host for #ideachat on Saturday, August 11th at 9 am ET. He will be joined by @CDEgger as we discuss "Ideas for Social Good."

"If we are to solve these so called wicked problems then we need be addressing these issues systemically and working in new ways across sectors drawing from diverse disciplines for new approaches to cocreate innovative and effective solutions to transform our failing systems and institutions. As Einstein famously stated, 'We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.' And it might just be good business.

So what do we need to be doing differently, and how do we need to be thinking differently if we're to solve the grand challenges of our time? Where can we find ideas for social good and how might we best make them happen and have a positive impact?

Join us for this month's #ideachat where we'll explore ideas for social good - and the idea of social good. We will discuss how we can support the development of a global ecosystem to share, develop and implement ideas to transform community, culture and systems, and ideas that can help us build better futures for all, together."

"Innovators are Conversation Architects" What is the Future for Twitter Chats? #ideachat 5/12 | #ideachat | Scoop.it

The above Prezi, "Innovators are Conversation Architects,"  is from my presentations on Twitter and curation in 2010 both at Realtime in New York and the IDEAGORAS conference for Healthcare Social Media in Madrid.

I saw that "curating" content around strategic hashtags could also become a powerful means of community-building and branding. I thought about the power an individual could have for innovation, and the many opportunities conversation architects could create with global hashtag conversations.

"I think the most important skill for a network weaver is simply to be present with other people. What that means is that people are really listening to each other, they are asking questions that bring intelligence out of a person, and they are thinking about who they can connect that new person to..."

"In this new world, relationships are going to be more rewarding, more precious, and more valuable to us."
