Resources & Readings for IDA Conference Session: “Why Tweet? Discover & Leverage Social Media”
This Scoop.it! page supports and extends my presentation for the 2014 International Dyslexia Association Conference. SCOPE: The content curated on the pages below emphasizes Twitter, but includes other social media platforms and material. SEQUENCE: The content follows a progression—from relatively basic to more advanced—and is intended to support a mixed audience—from those just getting their feet wet to those who are more experienced.                                           PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION (T11): Grassroots/parent groups are harnessing the power of social media to create change. But academics, researchers, educators, and nonprofits have been slower to leverage social media in their work. Curious to learn why and how to use social media (particularly Twitter) on behalf of those with dyslexia and others? Time precludes nuts-and-bolts detail, but I drop a few bread crumbs—including stories and practical applications from colleagues—hoping to entice you down the path to learn more. HOMEWORK: In advance, read/view material on this page (www.scoop.it/t/ida-conference-social-media-resources-readings). BTW: IDA's Conference hashtag is #DyslexiaCon.

BishopBlog: A gentle introduction to Twitter for the apprehensive academic

BishopBlog: A gentle introduction to Twitter for the apprehensive academic | Resources & Readings for IDA Conference Session: “Why Tweet? Discover & Leverage Social Media” | Scoop.it

If I tell people I’m on Twitter, I tend to get one of three reactions:

a) Isn’t it all about what Lady Gaga had for breakfast?
b) How do you find the time?
c) You?!!! (Implication: Twitter is for hip juveniles rather than fossilised academics)

(Click title to read entire post.)
Carolyn D Cowen's insight:

Do academics find value in tweeting? Dr. Bishop (AKA @deevybee) does! Her CV is impressive, but so are her tweet stats. As of June 2014: 12.9K tweets and 14.1K followers. If you want to see someone doing Twitter phenomenally well, follow Dr. Bishop. You will learn on two levels—not only does she exemplify the best in tweeting, her content is valuable for anyone interested in topics such as neuroscience, dyslexia, learning, and literacy.
