'Crazy' to say Facebook helped Trump win - Zuckerberg - BBC News

'Crazy' to say Facebook helped Trump win - Zuckerberg - BBC News | ICTL Space - Level 7 - Outcome 2.3 | Scoop.it
Mark Zuckerberg has strongly defended his network over claims it helped spread misinformation leading to Donald Trump's rise to power.
Llandrillo Library's insight:
An interesting article looking at the place of social media as a news aggregator. Firstly it was claimed that the news moderator team were too liberal and anti-Trump, so they got rid of the news team. An automated algorithm now collates people's news feed and now FB is being blamed for being too Trump supportive and one of the reasons he won! FB claims that the news feeds are generated based on subjects that the account holder has a preference for (just kike Google and the results of your searches) - what does this mean for the concept of filter bubble and confirmation bias?

Thingful - a search engine for the Internet of Things

Thingful is a search engine for the Internet of Things, providing a geographical index of where things are, who owns them, and how and why they are used.
Llandrillo Library's insight:

The Internet of Things - the future now! A searchable map of the world of items with connective data. Warning - you'll loose hours looking at everything but search for your local area and see who's broadcasting data. Do you think they know?

Twitter Plans to Go Beyond Its 140-Character Limit

Llandrillo Library's insight:

Will this change the whole atmosphere of Twitter. I liked having to be very concise - it's a skill!

I agree, I think the 140 character limit is what makes twitter unique. If changes are made there will be nothing to set it apart from Facebook

Mobile internet is now just the internet

Mobile internet is now just the internet | ICTL Space - Level 7 - Outcome 2.3 | Scoop.it
Smartphones are increasingly becoming the devices on which we access the web at home as well as on the move
Llandrillo Library's insight:

There have been more mobile phone subscriptions than people on the planet since 2013! (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-22464368) - with this in mind the article above shouldn't come as a surprise. But the speed of the scale of the phone ownership and the pace of change to personal devices and wifi usage weren't as obvious. In developing countries the mobile phone is being seen as the way to beat the digital divide and they are a far more practical solution than desktops or laptops.

Why (And How) Libraries Are Getting Reinvented

Why (And How) Libraries Are Getting Reinvented | ICTL Space - Level 7 - Outcome 2.3 | Scoop.it

But I am also a digital junkie. My smartphone beeps with sounds that are pinging, dinging, and popping 24 hours a day. And let’s …

Internet dating and organ donation - if you ever doubted the power of social media and apps then take a look at the article above.

Elen Hughes's comment, January 7, 9:25 AM
I think that this is an excellent idea. As there are 50 million active users on tinder, who check their accounts 11 times per day and spend 90 minutes per day on the app, this is a brilliant way of raising awareness about organ donation.

News consumption in the UK -2015 report

News consumption in the UK -2015 report | ICTL Space - Level 7 - Outcome 2.3 | Scoop.it
Published 16|12|15
Llandrillo Library's insight:
Facebook is now the joint-fifth most popular source for news, being used by 12% of UK adults.

This raises all sorts of questions about the social media bubble that people can 'live' on sites - we tend to create circles of people who hold the same beliefs and outlooks as us online, so what might be the implications of the types of news sources they are accessing? Does it make the library's role as an impartial source of news even more important?
