The Language Resources Centre at the University of Southampton is indeed a wonderful learning environment for language study.
Learning a foreign language is an ongoing or continuous process as it takes time to familiarise oneself with the grammar, vocabulary, syntax and pronunciation before gaining native-like fluency.
This can only happen with continuous practice in speaking, reading, writing and listening.
The Language Resources Centre (or LRC) is equipped with a wide range of tools to support students in their language learning.
Facilities in the LRC include foreign language books, textbooks and grammar exercises, dictionaries, self-access courses and foreign language newspapers and magazines.
There is also a range of multimedia resources including audio cassettes, CDs and language laboratories where you can practice your listening and speaking skills or watch satellite television from around the world. Alternatively, you can borrow a foreign language DVD which you can watch at home.
The LRC also provides an open working space for students who are in need of a quiet place to sit and study; particularly when it comes to exam revision or essay-writing time.
In addition, a student can ask for assistance from the Language Advisory Service team to reflect on his/her language learning progress and to discuss suggestions or approaches that might help him/her to learn more effectively.

Having such a lab in a school can only promote the learning of language. The learners will be exposed to the spoken form, written form of the language thus make it easier to learn and respond. The resources available will greatly contribute in the learning process. The users will have to be exposed to such an environment as often as possible so that the learning can take place in a short period of time.

yes, indeed a vast collection of softwares are proposed to help students in their research in asian language education.
Bernard Thanay's comment, February 28, 2013 3:42 AM
It is mentioned for a few software that the lessons are worth 2 years learning which is done in 105 lessons, it must be a very intensive course and might cause trouble for slow learners. there is also the option that the teacher steps in and use the software to meet the learner's abilities and skills. The learners can also practice on their own at home once the software is installed on a pc. It helps them to be independent learners and thus increase their self esteem and thus be confident.

There is a wide range of software from sign language software to latin passing through English or French for beginners to fleunt speakers. These softwares can be very useful for a wide range of people as they can learn from their home rather than having to pay for courses or go abroad to learn. The learner can learn the desired language at his own pace. Personally i have not used the software but based on what i have read of it, i can say that it can be a very useful tool for any teacher teaching language: mainly in countries of non speakers where for example: teaching spanish: can become easier as the child will be able to have consolidation works at home, hear the words and become more aquainted to the language.

It is can be used as a resource. Whereby users will have access to different language option/possibility on the same platform. Like Priya so rightly said, student will be able to browse around without having to spread themselves everywhere. Furthermore, I think that this resource can get student to be more involved and interested in their learning.
Bernard Thanay's comment, February 28, 2013 2:32 AM
I agree that this could be used as a resource as it helps a lot in the translation of words and they will find it fun to do translation. however the learners might encounter problems while translating in the spoken form as the pronunciation might be very tricky as many times we have seen that words in the written form does not sound at all the same and this might cause confusion in the learning process.

Dictionaries contain a large amount of words used in a language. it is very useful for a learner as well as a teacher to have a dictionary to be able to explain a word or know its equivalent in another language so as to explain it better. to have such dictionaries online is a real advantage. People dont have to buy it, but can use and access it wherever they want. though i dont see how it can be helpful in the teaching of language, i know language aquisition that is: grammar, syntax, pronunciation will be facilitated
