The PEI – Gates Foundation PhD Scholarship Programme is seeking to award 10,000 PhD Scholarships to African researchers over the next ten years, equipping the continent with the scienti c knowledge base to support sustainable, diversi ed economic growth built upon local expertise. The programme will launch a pilot of 10 students in Mauritius in 2016, funded jointly by the PEI and the Gates Foundation, and in partnership with the African Academy of Sciences (AAS). Each researcher awarded a scholarship will spend time at both an African and a UK host university, as well as time in industry, as relevance to the private sector and potential impact on economic growth are critical to the programme.
