Most of us have to work on our basic tech skills. This list is a good place to start. It could serve as a start to a Tech PD series for many schools or districts.

Gordon Dahlby's comment, February 13, 6:12 PM
Looks more like a walk down an exhibit hall of vendors than skill/talent tied to teaching & learning.
Rod Murray's comment, February 13, 7:21 PM
If every teacher had this skill set, that would dramatically change teaching and learning. The "vendors" are, contrary to your suggestion, mostly free technologies that can and do change teaching and learning.

Google for Education: Exploring Computational Thinking

Google for Education: Exploring Computational Thinking | ICT Nieuws | Scoop.it
Exploring Computational Thinking (ECT) is a curated collection of lesson plans, videos, and other resources on computational thinking (CT). This site was created to provide a better understanding of CT for educators and administrators, and to support those who want to integrate CT into their own classroom content, teaching practice, and learning.

ECT includes:

     * 130+ materials, including lessons plans, demonstrations, and programs, aligned to international education standards

     * Videos demonstrating how Google uses CT and the 7 Big Ideas from the CS Principles course

Computational thinking (CT) is a problem solving process that includes a number of characteristics, such as logically ordering and analyzing data and creating solutions using a series of ordered steps (or algorithms), and dispositions, such as the ability to confidently deal with complexity and open-ended problems. CT is essential to the development of computer applications, but it can also be used to support problem solving across all disciplines, including math, science, and the humanities. Students who learn CT across the curriculum can begin to see a relationship between subjects as well as between school and life outside of the classroom.

A Class on #Coding and #Bots - User Generated Education @JackieGerstein

A Class on #Coding and #Bots - User Generated Education @JackieGerstein | ICT Nieuws | Scoop.it
I have been asked to return to teach summer enrichment classes on maker education for elementary-aged learners at a local school during the summer of 2016. One of the new classes I am designing is called Coding and Bots. It is a week long (5 days) class that will meet for 2.5 hours each morning. The description is:

Learn how to code first by playing games and then by coding some bots including Sphero, Ollie, mBot, OZOBOT, and Dash and Dot. All ages are welcome but the child should have basic symbol recognition/reading skills.

Two things to note about this class are, first, I learned last summer not to underestimate the learning potential of very young kids. These classes are mixed ages ranging from 4 to 10 year old kids. For most of the maker education activities, the very young ones could perform them, sometimes better than the older kids. Second, I am a strong proponent of hands on activities. Although I like the use of iPads and computers, I want elementary aged students to have to directly interact with materials. As such, I am designing Coding and Bots to include using their bodies and manipulating objects. This translates into having all activities include the use of objects and materials excluding and in conjunction with the iPad – not just using the iPad and online apps/tools to learn to code. The activities I plan to do follow:

Unlocking the #Code for #Robotics in the #Classroom - Edutopia

Unlocking the #Code for #Robotics in the #Classroom - Edutopia | ICT Nieuws | Scoop.it

"In President Obama's final State of the Union address, he expressed the importance of "helping students learn to write computer code." In a recent YouTube video for Code.org, Obama spoke to students, urging them to "master the tools and technology that will change just about everything." Obama is correct. Our students' focus must shift from passive purveyors of technology to creators of programs, apps, and inventions. We must push them past low levels of static reception into a dynamic mindset, highlighting and nourishing thought and imagination to improve our world.

The elephant in the room is the cost associated with computer science technology. Programs like Code.org, Khan Academy, and others offer a viable solution. They're free to educators and parents, offer motivational incentives, and attract students with highly colorful graphics and relatable character interfaces, such as zombie attacks or familiar video game characters. Sites like these are the first step to introduce coding into the classroom.

Robotics is the next step. Over the past few years, the market has witnessed the rise of robotic tools -- like Sphero, Wonder Workshop and Lego Mindstorms -- that teach students how to code. At its core, robotics moves students away from the solitary interface of a computer screen and into an active social community. Not only does the space of the student's world increase in size, so do the benefits that computer science has to offer.

Teachers know what their students need emotionally, socially, and academically. Therefore, teachers should be properly armed to advocate for change, when needed. Here are five reasons to consider purchasing robotics for the K-12 classroom."

New Ways to Teach Young Children to Code

New Ways to Teach Young Children to Code | ICT Nieuws | Scoop.it
Many parents want their children to learn to code. Tech leaders and educators are pushing schools to add more computer-science classes, and families often see programming as an essential skill for the future.

But unlike reading to your children or teaching them to count, preparing children to code can feel daunting and unnatural. Many parents think they can’t help because they don’t know math or programming themselves.

Increasingly, though, parents who have never written a line of code are finding ways to teach their children basic programming skills. Some tap websites, gaming apps or online puzzles using visual programming languages designed for children. Others focus on teaching the kind of thinking that coding requires. For instance, even young children can learn how to break tasks into steps and perform them in order—a programming concept called sequencing—or to repeat a series of steps until a task is complete, a concept called loops.

6 Outstanding Augmented Reality Apps for Science Teachers ~ EdTech and MLearning | ICT Nieuws | Scoop.it
Augmented Reality (AR) technologies are making some huge leaps into the educational landscape transforming the way teaching and learning are taking place. Educators and teachers are increasingly adopting AR technologies in their classrooms. As extensions of the physical world,  AR technologies amplify its dimensions and bring life to its static constituents. There are a variety of ways you can use AR in your class. For instance, you can use them to take your students into virtual field trips, visit world museums, animate and enrich textbook content and many more.
