Universal Skills All Learners Should Know How to Do - User Generated Education

Universal Skills All Learners Should Know How to Do - User Generated Education | ICT Nieuws | Scoop.it
This morning I was thinking about the things that all young people should know how to do regardless of income, geographical location, life goals, etc.  I started a list – see below.  Some have “always” been true – some are unique to this century of learning.  Let me know of any other universal skills you believe young people should know how to do.

"Creating a connected classroom has gotten far more affordable now that the major tech companies have begun pouring resources into reaching teachers, students, parents, and school leaders. Aside from the Apple iPad, the biggest player in the world of education technology has to be Google. They regularly unleash new productivity and collaboration tools as part of the Google Apps For Education suite.

Many teachers and schools have already ‘gone Google’ so what better way to figure out how to actually get started with the powerful tools than from an effective checklist that lets you quickly discover and check off new ways to use Google Apps For Education in your classroom, school, or district."

TinyTap Gets a Facelift - Create Your Own iPad Games for Older Students - iPad Apps for School

TinyTap Gets a Facelift - Create Your Own iPad Games for Older Students - iPad Apps for School | ICT Nieuws | Scoop.it

iTinyTap is a great iPad app for developing your own educational games. I’ve been a big supporter of the app since it launched a couple of years ago. TinyTap has always been targeted toward the K-3 crowd, but it can certainly be used with older students too. To reflect that TinyTap has uses in older grades, the developers gave the app a bit of a facelift and added some new features.

TinyTap still works the way that it always has, but some of the decorations and animations that were included to appeal to young students are optional rather than default settings.

A Harvard physics professor says schoolchildren must be allowed to access the internet and talk to friends in the exams hall to reflect the conditions seen in the workplace

Carlos Fosca's curator insight, December 8, 7:42 AM

Coding for Kindergarteners - Edutopia

Coding for Kindergarteners - Edutopia | ICT Nieuws | Scoop.it
Last year at this time, I was trying not to think about kindergarteners. I was still teaching ninth grade English and had just accepted a job teaching technology to K-5. I was excited about the challenge, and I knew that I'd bitten off more than I could chew.

Developing the tech curriculum challenged me to teach programming or at least computational thinking at each elementary grade level. Our school is mid-pivot in technology -- we're in our second year of a middle school 1:2 iPad program, our first year of having a cart of iPads available for elementary, and our last year of two PC labs for the students to use (next year we'll have only one lab). Knowing this, I wanted to design a program that mostly used tablet-based tools.

William Griffin's curator insight, December 7, 9:04 PM

The idea of teaching children how to code is a great one.  Technology has rapidly changed the world and all of it stems from coding.  Just like most skills, the sooner its learned, the more time it can be mastered, and ultimately effectiveness is maximized.
