A Class on #Coding and #Bots - User Generated Education @JackieGerstein

A Class on #Coding and #Bots - User Generated Education @JackieGerstein | ICT Nieuws | Scoop.it
I have been asked to return to teach summer enrichment classes on maker education for elementary-aged learners at a local school during the summer of 2016. One of the new classes I am designing is called Coding and Bots. It is a week long (5 days) class that will meet for 2.5 hours each morning. The description is:

Learn how to code first by playing games and then by coding some bots including Sphero, Ollie, mBot, OZOBOT, and Dash and Dot. All ages are welcome but the child should have basic symbol recognition/reading skills.

Two things to note about this class are, first, I learned last summer not to underestimate the learning potential of very young kids. These classes are mixed ages ranging from 4 to 10 year old kids. For most of the maker education activities, the very young ones could perform them, sometimes better than the older kids. Second, I am a strong proponent of hands on activities. Although I like the use of iPads and computers, I want elementary aged students to have to directly interact with materials. As such, I am designing Coding and Bots to include using their bodies and manipulating objects. This translates into having all activities include the use of objects and materials excluding and in conjunction with the iPad – not just using the iPad and online apps/tools to learn to code. The activities I plan to do follow:

Unlocking the #Code for #Robotics in the #Classroom - Edutopia

Unlocking the #Code for #Robotics in the #Classroom - Edutopia | ICT Nieuws | Scoop.it

"In President Obama's final State of the Union address, he expressed the importance of "helping students learn to write computer code." In a recent YouTube video for Code.org, Obama spoke to students, urging them to "master the tools and technology that will change just about everything." Obama is correct. Our students' focus must shift from passive purveyors of technology to creators of programs, apps, and inventions. We must push them past low levels of static reception into a dynamic mindset, highlighting and nourishing thought and imagination to improve our world.

The elephant in the room is the cost associated with computer science technology. Programs like Code.org, Khan Academy, and others offer a viable solution. They're free to educators and parents, offer motivational incentives, and attract students with highly colorful graphics and relatable character interfaces, such as zombie attacks or familiar video game characters. Sites like these are the first step to introduce coding into the classroom.

Robotics is the next step. Over the past few years, the market has witnessed the rise of robotic tools -- like Sphero, Wonder Workshop and Lego Mindstorms -- that teach students how to code. At its core, robotics moves students away from the solitary interface of a computer screen and into an active social community. Not only does the space of the student's world increase in size, so do the benefits that computer science has to offer.

Teachers know what their students need emotionally, socially, and academically. Therefore, teachers should be properly armed to advocate for change, when needed. Here are five reasons to consider purchasing robotics for the K-12 classroom."

VR platform offerings could result in a curator or artist guiding a group of thousands around a museum exhibition or cultural site, or an actor or professor leading a virtual master class in real time with students from all over the world.

Have you ever needed to download music or video files to your iPad or iPhone? The lack of a dedicated file structure on the iPad is an often maligned feature that leads some to turn against the iPad as a tool for the classroom, but it shouldn’t.
