15+ Ways of Teaching Every Student to Code (Even Without a Computer)

15+ Ways of Teaching Every Student to Code (Even Without a Computer) | ICT for Education and Development | Scoop.it

"According to Code.org, 90 percent of parents in the U.S. want their children to learn computer science—it will be crucial for many jobs in the near future—but only 40 percent of schools teach it. Critics claim that it is mainly the more affluent schools that offer computer science courses, thus denying those who attend poorer schools the chance to learn necessary skills. A focus on STEM is not enough: Code.org also reports that while 70 percent of new STEM jobs are in computing, only 7 percent of STEM graduates are in computer science. It is imperative that savvy schools begin to focus some STEM resources on computer science and programming.

In my opinion, parents of every student in every school at every level should demand that all students be taught how to code. They need this skill not because they’ll all go into it as a career—that isn’t realistic—but because it impacts every career in the 21st-century world. Any country recognizing that will benefit in the long term.

With the following resources, you can teach programming to every student and every age."

How technology creates facilitative disruption in the classroom

How technology creates facilitative disruption in the classroom | ICT for Education and Development | Scoop.it
There is no doubt that technology has the potential to be a major disruptor in the classroom. There are two kinds of disruption: facilitative, or “good”, disruption; and debilitating, or “bad”, disruption. So what matters most is the type of disruption being caused not so much the disruption itself.

In agreement with the article, we should encourage our students to think in an innovative way in order to foster their agency for learning and in that way create opportunities for facilitative disruption to take place. Moreover, in order to avoid debilitating disruption is important to always keep in mind that technology should be used as a means, that is as a support or complement and not as a suplement of materials of class. In that way, we would be avoiding to screw everything up when technology fails by having a plan B.

The Padlet is good to use when all the students have an internet connected device, a tablet, for example, and they have go in for audience polls, and short answers. The results and the responses can be seen by all on a screen in the classroom. All our classrooms have wifi and projectors which can be connected to laptops.

Padlet, c'est un chouette outil. A utiliser, surtout aussi pour son aspect visuel.
Leslie Varela's curator insight, November 14, 2016 11:47 PM
In my opinión this interesting tool contributes to create a good atmosphere where students can interact and share their knowledge and investigations with the whole class. Personally, I would like to use this tool in three different ways: 1) Create a feedback wall where students can post suggestions and express concerns anonymously. 2) Build a matching exercise on the wall and have students rearrange the photos and text to solve, and 3) Create a digital map and have students post their findings about new cultures. The main idea is to teach the topics using other alternatives in order to motivate students participation.

What's changed: Ten reflections on ten years of technology use in education | ICT for Education and Development | Scoop.it
How will such discussions evolve in the coming years? Who knows? While no doubt a lot of fun, and attractive fodder for both intense research and idle speculation, predictions related to the future of technological advances, and the implications of such advances on teaching and learning, will in many cases look rather silly in hindsight. It is hard to argue, however, that discussions related to the planning for, use of and impact of technologies in education will not become more important, and acute, in the coming years, whatever form those technologies may eventually take.

Audio books and pod casts are great for English language learners as well!  Not only with reading, but pronunciation and fluency as well.
Julian Diaz's curator insight, November 6, 2016 2:23 PM
Could an audio actually help children to improve their reading skills?

When I first saw the tittle of this article, it came to my mind my early school years when the teachers or my parents punished me because my reading skills were really bad, even nowadays, I don't enjoy that much the reading, it's easier for me if I listen the information, rather than reading it.

This happens nowadays to a lot of children and a good strategie to improve their reading skills is playing an audio-book while they read the book itslef, thus they don't have to encode every single word, their pronunciation could improve, and they learn to read very fast as well.

Another reason for which teachers and parents should take into account this strategy, is that it can actually help acquiring new languages, since if you play an audio in any language to a child in an early age, the children could learn it just as he/she learns the mother tongue.

I consider that this is a very good strategie to help children with low reading skills and I plan to implment it in my future classes.
