Record sea-surface temperatures in Pacific point to record warmth in 2015 and 2016 | ICT for Education and Development | Scoop.it

March sea-surface temperatures in the Coral Sea region off Queensland broke the previous high by 0.12 degrees – a big jump for oceans that are typically more thermally stable than land. Temperatures for the entire Australian ocean region also set new highs for the month, the Bureau of Meteorology said.

The climate is on a performance-enhancing drug and that drug is carbon dioxide

Five Laws of Media and Information Literacy (MIL) | #UNESCO #ModernEDU #Infographic | ICT for Education and Development | Scoop.it

Empowerment of people through Media and Information Literacy (MIL) is an important prerequisite for fostering equitable access to information and knowledge and promoting free, independent and pluralistic media and information systems.

Media and Information Literacy recognizes the primary role of information and media in our everyday lives. It lies at the core of freedom of expression and information - since it empowers citizens to understand the functions of media and other information providers, to critically evaluate their content, and to make informed decisions as users and producer of information and media content.

10 Ways to Create the Classroom of the Future

10 Ways to Create the Classroom of the Future | ICT for Education and Development | Scoop.it

"While educational standards may differ from school to school there is one thing that is always nearly the same: the classroom set out. Desks are arranged in rows or groups, and the teacher stands at the front and teach. This set out has changed very little in a hundred years even with all the technological advancements that have been made. Edtech not only changes the way that children learn but changes the way they interact with one another, the classroom space and their teacher."

Teaching in a Digital Age | The Open Textbook Project provides flexible and affordable access to higher education resources | ICT for Education and Development | Scoop.it

The book examines the underlying principles that guide effective teaching in an age when all of us, and in particular the students we are teaching, are using technology. A framework for making decisions about your teaching is provided, while understanding that every subject is different, and every instructor has something unique and special to bring to their teaching. The book enables teachers and instructors to help students develop the knowledge and skills they will need in a digital age: not so much the IT skills, but the thinking and attitudes to learning that will bring them success.

"Although the book contains many practical examples, it is more than a cookbook on how to teach. It addresses the following questions: is the nature of knowledge changing, and how do different views on the nature of knowledge result in different approaches to teaching? what is the science and research that can best help me in my teaching? how do I decide whether my courses should be face-to-face, blended or fully online? what strategies work best when teaching in a technology-rich environment? what methods of teaching are most effective for blended and online classes? how do I make choices among all the available media, whether text, audio, video, computer, or social media, in order to benefit my students and my subject? how do I maintain high quality in my teaching in a rapidly changing learning environment while managing my workload? what are the real possibilities for teaching and learning using MOOCs, OERS, open textbooks?"

Two interesting perspectives in this article – the Digital Native lens (active learner video) and link to an article on explicit learning (and its continued role in education – although tempered with measures of active learning). As an online university tutor (sage on the stage) and doctoral student in Education (Distance Education) I am curious about finding the right mix of learning strategies to help learners.

This article points out that canned deliverables from tech companies are not personalized learning. Technology has its place in the classroom but we need to remember to teach the individual students. Teachers working with students using technology is most effective and personal.

Ivon Prefontaine, PhD's curator insight, July 4, 1:26 PM
"The central tenet of Watters’ perspective is unassailable. The engines of Silicon Valley are not interested in learners or educators. One does not need to look far to see the forces of individualism, neoliberalism, libertarianism, or imperialism at work."

This has always been the case. Henry Ford and other industrialists were not interested in the needs of schools and people. They were interested in their bottom line and how schools and people could add to that. It remains that way.

The article addresses actual and perceived digital divide. The emphasis on technology in the classroom should be active learning and not passive.  The real change will come from teacher buy-in and use. It will be a bottom-up (teachers) change instead of the usual top down (district).

Strangely enough, there continues to be resistance towards the use of technology amongst a large number of teachers who have graduated till the nineties. Fortunately enough many of them use smartphones! Optimum integration of technology in teaching will happen only when teachers are involved in the decision-making process, they are given enough training and support rather than being dumped into the deep end, and yes, the technology should be 'user-friendly'. We have moved away from chalk and talk, we use laptops and projectors in class, we have wifi, and are soon going have students bringing their own devices.

A much more nuanced view, and one that I appreciate. I have long called so-called digital natives "digital naives" because the majority of kids only know enough about tech to use it to accomplish what they wish to accomplish. Tech does not really come any easier for them. Tech is simply more common to them.
