e-Learning conference calls for sustainable innovation - University World News

e-Learning conference calls for sustainable innovation - University World News | ICT for Education and Development | Scoop.it

The 8th International Conference on ICT for Development, Education and Training – aka e-Learning Africa – ended in the Namibian capital Windhoek with delegates calling for homegrown, sustainable innovation in e-learning to spur development across Africa.

Discussions during the three-day conference revolved around local innovation in education, healthcare delivery, livelihoods and agriculture, especially for rural communities.

In the final debate, Dr Adele Botha, an expert in implementing and using mobile technologies in goal-oriented interactions, teamed up with Angelo Gitonga from the Ministry of Education in Kenya to argue that innovation should take precedence over sustainability.
In closing the conference, Namibia’s Minister of Education Dr David Namwandi argued, to rapturous applause, that innovation and sustainability were “twin brothers” that should be vigorously promoted to develop communities.

Developing the digital literacies of academic staff: an institutional approach | Newland | Research in Learning Technology | ICT for Education and Development | Scoop.it

For each literacy, there is an explanation of what the literacy is, why it is important and how to gain it, with links to resources and training opportunities. After an initial pilot, the DLF website was launched in the summer of 2014. This paper discusses the strategic context and policy development of the DLF, its initial conception and subsequent development based on a pilot phase, feedback and evaluation. It critically analyses two of the ways that engagement with the DLF have been promoted: (1) formal professional development schemes and (2) the use of a ‘School-based’ approach. It examines the successes and challenges of the University of Brighton’s scheme and makes some suggestions for subsequent steps including taking a course-level approach.

Our education system is in need of reform. How Technology Can Expand Creativity and Innovation in Education

How Technology Can Expand Creativity and Innovation in Education | ICT for Education and Development | Scoop.it

Creativity has always been a part of a successful classroom, however recent advances in technology are making it possible to increase the ability for students to use their creativity in academia. With the ability to take and store thousands of pictures and videos, and listen to music in the palms of our hands, our students have the ability to be more and more creative in their projects, assignments, as well as group and individual tasks.

Technology is part of our daily lifes, and we need to integrate it in our classroom, since foster creativity and innovation and encourage the development of new ideas that reach thousands through social media
Alexander Daron's curator insight, October 15, 11:06 AM

I chose this resource because I agree 100% with the title. When I have used different technology and different programs with my students, they love it. Students in todays society get bored sitting in class with teachers talking to them. They want to be up and moving around working with technology to help them learn. I hope that this article will prove to our teachers that they must use technology for the benefit of their students. I have been in special education classrooms where autistic students were benefiting so much from programs on the iPad. Implementing these practices is so important to our students.

Alexander Daron's curator insight, October 15, 11:42 AM

I chose this resource because students can be so creative when using technology in their education. They aren't restricted, and can create assignments or projects that make sense to them. They aren't restricted, and don't have to do exactly what the teacher tells them. I hope that this article will come true for many schools around America. Too often, teachers are afraid to let students be creative with the use of technology, because it is outside of their comfort zone to let the students venture off and create their own learning opportunities.

Is Google taking over the classroom? | ICT for Education and Development | Scoop.it
These elite conversations around the ‘Future of Education’ are conducted almost entirely without input from teachers (and very rarely pupils and definitely not parents). Instead, techno-reform is something that is done to the profession. It is communicated to educators (and the public) through hype and marketing slogans – such as ‘personalized learning’ – that are designed to persuade and win support, not open up debates.

If this is true in US, then how much more so on a global scale?

Elaine J Roberts, Ph.D.'s curator insight, September 20, 8:33 AM

I talked to a brand new teacher recently who wondered why she'd bothered to go to college since her education program prepared her for very little of what actually happens in her school, a Title 1 school. She has little to no familiarity with technology or even where to go to find resources to figure out what's best to use when. When she does try to research something, she is overwhelmed by the options. She is not alone. A tech coach can help provided the tech coach isn't split between numerous buildings and provided the tech coach has time and opportunity to research other options and knows how to ask teachers questions about what they need and want, especially since most teachers don't know what they don't know. It's a conundrum not easily solved by working with an edtech consultant, though that is a solution. You can find me on Twitter @elainej or check out my web site: http://www.p20partners.com. I can help.
