Online 'Driver's Ed' Course Preps Kids for the Social Web | ICT for Education and Development | Scoop.it

As any parent knows, kids aren't naturally inclined to consider the consequences of their impulsive online actions, which can have real repercussions down the line. And in an age where our kids are ever-more connected via the social web, but arguably remain unprepared for the responsibility that come with these connections, one Kickstarter project is looking to help.

"Like driver's ed for the social web," the project website says, "this course will prep tweens for their first Facebook account. With a twist. Parents study, too." It's called HomePage, and it seeks to educate children and parents through an online curriculum that aims to provide both parties with the tools to tackle the social web's most prevalent problems; the snares mentioned, above, as well as academic dishonesty, abusive language and general best practices.

Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality are new technologies which engage students in a completely new way which is more fun and engaging for them, and it increases retention. This article show the 10 companies that are working on education in virtual reality and augmented reality. The first company is Immersive VR Education which created a Lecture VR is a VR app which simulates a lecture hall in virtual reality, while adding special effects that are accompanied by images, videos, and immersive experiences which enhance the lesson. The second company is Unimersiv which is a VR learning platform which releases educational content on a monthly basis.The next company is Alchemy VR which is creating immersive educational experiences on an impressive scale. These are the others companies Google, thinglink, gamar, Schell Games,EON Reality,Nearpod and WoofbertVR which are working on it. Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality are the next big step forward in education, and these technologies are good for educators and students alike. These technologies give us a window into the future of education, and it probably won’t be long until it is standard for classrooms to come equipped with some form of VR or AR technology.

In contrast to traditional higher education, which closes learning off from the world, open learning is transparent and accessible to anyone with internet access. Such openness could do a lot to improve standards at universities whose business models are driven by bums on seats, rather than mastery of a given subject. It might also lift the morale of academia. Academics who are in control of what they teach, and who teach students who seek them out, may regain their professional freedom. Around 7,000 online students recently earned the first certificates awarded by MIT and Harvard through their Edx partnership. That’s more than twice the number of degrees that MIT awarded at this year’s commencement. Another 147,596 observers signed up to marvel at what an MIT course is really like. Substantially greater numbers are expected for the spring course offerings. Their first MIT course, Circuits and Electronics, was tough. University level maths and physics were prerequisites, and the exam would give many nosebleeds.

Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) is a framework that identifies the knowledge teachers need to teach effectively with technology.The TPACK framework extends Shulman’s idea of Pedagogical Content Knowledge.

The TPACK framework is highly important as teachers in dvelopment, since we should not only master the content of the topics being taught, but also how it best suits the learners' needs, and how  they will be able to understand it in a simple manner, and once these two elements have been mastered, it is needed to reflect upon the impact of thecnology in the learning and teaching processes. So, in this article we will find information about the TPACK model and its impact in the processes of teching and learning.

Moreover, the author shows us hoe to build the teachers' confidence in the use of technology, and some tips to best enhance its development in the classroom

In my opinion, substitution, argumentation, modification and redefinition (SAMR) model is a very useful tool to have into account as a starting point, or as a reference one, to start thinking about the way teachers can design lessons and the role they want technology to play into the classroom. It could also be used as a way to make students reflect upon the way they normally use technology and to make them aware of other possibilities and different ways in which they could do it. Furthermore, we can use this method as a pretext to discover others and to explore other ways in which technology could help us all to enhance teaching-learning processes.

Interesantes resultados y recomendaciones que surgen de un estudio realizado a partir del análisis de la data recogida de la observación de 6.9 millones de sesiones de videos por parte de estudiantes de cuatro cursos edX y de entrevistas con equipos de producción de dichos videos. Se midió el nivel de interés (engagement) que estos videos provocaron en los estudiantes de manera indirecta a través del tiempo en que estos permanecían observando el video. Aún cuando esta no es ni siquiera una buena medida para comprender el impacto de estos contenidos multimedia en el aprendizaje de los alumnos, el estudio brinda algunas interesantes luces sobre como deben producirse estos videos para fines educativos y conseguir al menos que los estudiantes no se aburran rápidamente con ellos.
