MPrep: Making education mobile for the world

MPrep: Making education mobile for the world | ICT for Education and Development | Scoop.it

Though Kenya has emerged as a regional powerhouse for mobile innovation, many of its future visionaries remain burdened by the structural challenges—overcrowding, underfunding, and lack of access—facing the 9 million Kenyan children in primary school.

The problem is especially daunting in rural areas, where more than two out of three current students will fail their classes, including 80 percent of girls.

In response, MPrep founder Toni Maraviglia designed the app to make it possible for teachers to deliver quality, one-on-one attention to students, and to monitor their performance in detail, even remotely—all just a text message away in a country with widespread mobile access.

A sustainable way of introducing IT in developing countries - About Education Degrees | ICT for Education and Development | Scoop.it

The paper describes an approach to the sustainable introduction of IT in developing countries based on international collaboration between students taking the form of a knowledge bridge. The authors consider the challenges for introducing information technologies in developing countries; one of these is lack of reading materials ultimately leading to lack of reading skills in pupils and poor overall performance.

A theoretical framework for the sustainable introduction of IT is proposed. It comprises the following components:

The model of a knowledge bridge; The managerial model of the interactions between key stakeholders; andThe model of impact of a Community Outreach Project (COP) on target schools.

eLearning Interactivity: The Ultimate Guide For eLearning Professionals - eLearning Industry | ICT for Education and Development | Scoop.it
Interested in knowing how interactivity affects eLearning? Check the eLearning Interactivity: The Ultimate Guide For eLearning Professionals

eLearning interactivity is defined as the “dialogue” between learners and eLearning tools through which learners become engaged and involved in the eLearning process. It is a key element of the actual eLearning course design process, and it has proven to be a practice that adds outstanding value to your eLearning course. It involves forms of action or reaction on learners’ behalf, in order for them to achieve results or reach a conclusion. eLearning interactions may include multiple choice quizzes, tests, eLearning scenarios, simulations, animation videos etc, that help learners to deepen their understanding of the subject matter through experimentation, dealing with unpredicted circumstances, or even learning from their mistakes.

"I enjoy discussing iPad and other edtech resources with my colleague and friend Sylvia Duckworth almost every week through Twitter. Sylvia is a leader in the French teaching community in Canada, and has created an enormous amount of resources for language teachers to use. I asked her if she wanted to collaborate on this post, and she quickly agreed to do so. Below is a list of iPad apps that we both use in our language classrooms. The ones marked with an * are the essential, must-have ones. We have divided the list into two categories: Content consumption apps and content creation apps."

Sir Ken Robinson: Creativity Is In Everything, Especially Teaching

Sir Ken Robinson: Creativity Is In Everything, Especially Teaching | ICT for Education and Development | Scoop.it

Creativity is about fresh thinking. It doesn’t have to be new to the whole of humanity— though that’s always a bonus— but certainly to the person whose work it is. Creativity also involves making critical judgments about whether what you’re working on is any good, be it a theorem, a design, or a poem. Creative work often passes through typical phases. Sometimes what you end up with is not what you had in mind when you started. It’s a dynamic process that often involves making new connections, crossing disciplines, and using metaphors and analogies.

.

Being creative is not just about having off-the-wall ideas and letting your imagination run free. It may involve all of that, but it also involves refining, testing, and focusing what you’re doing. It’s about original thinking on the part of the individual, and it’s also about judging critically whether the work in process is taking the right shape and is worthwhile, at least for the person producing it.

Why Micro Learning Is Educating The ADD Generation - About Education Degrees | ICT for Education and Development | Scoop.it

It seems to be generally agreed that young people have shorter attention spans now than those a generation ago, but learning is still typically delivered in the same sized chunks. Some educationalists suggest that we need to address this disparity by reducing the size of the learning chunks, others by increasing the attention span.

What Will Education Look Like in a More Open Future? - About Education Degrees

What Will Education Look Like in a More Open Future? - About Education Degrees | ICT for Education and Development | Scoop.it

In his MindShift article, David Price (author of OPEN: How We’ll Work, Live And Learn In The Future) considers what open learning systems – as productivity and innovation drivers – would look like for educators:

Open learning systems apply the same learning principles to their professionals as they do to their students. They understand that the only sustainable transformation in education has to be owned by the people who have to implement it: teachers. They have high expectations of the profession’s capacity to learn through transparent, shared practice, and of their ability to rise to additional responsibilities. They have the humility to accept that learning now happens everywhere, anytime, and they work hard to integrate informal learning into the formal environment.
