Is Technology Holding Students Back? | Edudemic

Is Technology Holding Students Back? | Edudemic | ICT for Education and Development | Scoop.it
Today, a day without tech being used in the classroom would be an unusual day indeed. In fact, according to a survey by Front Row Education, 75% of teachers say they use technology daily with their students. Tablets and laptops are now common in many classrooms. These devices can be loaded with education programs and apps for students, and using this kind of technology makes it easy for teachers to track student progress.

On the cutting edge of ed-tech you’ll find tools like virtual reality and 3D printing. By using virtual reality technology, like Google Glass, students can visit other locations without ever leaving their desks. These tools use 3D imagery to make the wearer feel like they’re exploring a realm in person. 3D printing also gives students opportunities to explore cutting-edge concepts in the classroom. Students can design objects on a computer and then “print” them out on a 3D printer, which uses plastic or other materials to create the object. These kinds of technologies may currently be cost prohibitive for many schools, but you’re likely to see them being adopted by classrooms in the coming years.

3 Ways Exponential Technologies are Impacting the Future of Learning

3 Ways Exponential Technologies are Impacting the Future of Learning | ICT for Education and Development | Scoop.it

Exponential technologies have a tendency to move from a deceptively slow pace of development to a disruptively fast pace. We often disregard or don’t notice technologies in the deceptive growth phase, until they begin changing the way we live and do business.

Driven by information technologies, products and services become digitized, dematerialized, demonetized and/or democratized and enter a phase of exponential growth.

Nicole Wilson, who was Singularity University’s vice president of faculty and curriculum until last year, believes education technology is currently in a phase of deceptive growth, and we are seeing the beginning of how exponential technologies are impacting 1) what we need to learn, 2) how we view schooling and society and 3) how we will teach and learn in the future.

[Gust MEES] Simply put, as WE (#Schools) DON'T know WHAT THAT world would be, WE SHOULD prepare the #students #LEARNers for <===> #LEARNing2LEARN to become #LifeLongLEARNing persons! Please check my #blog post <===> https://gustmees.wordpress.com/.../teaching-was.../

20 Ideas for Professional Development in the Digital Age

20 Ideas for Professional Development in the Digital Age | ICT for Education and Development | Scoop.it
What is professional development?  It is pretty much anything that helps one develop professionally. At the heart, professional development is about growth and learning.  In the field of education, it seems like many quickly think of educational opportunities that mimic what they see in their schools. As a result, they turn professional learning and education into schooling.  The problem with that is that schooling is too limiting.  In this age, there are many other exciting and high-impact learning opportunities for teachers that extend beyond traditional notions of schooling.  When we hear the phrase “professional development,” certain practices likely come to mind, things like in-services and conferences. In the digital age, there are countless other opportunities for professional development and restricting one’s thoughts to just a few options limits our insight into what is possible for our students.  With that in mind, here is a brainstorm of 20 options available to educators today. This is far from an exhaustive list, but it is enough to start exploring the possibilities.  Feel free to suggest others in a comment to this post.

MIT Program Seeks To Engage High School Students Using Video Content - | ICT for Education and Development | Scoop.it
Why re-litigate Deflategate in a high school classroom – more than two years after the controversy started? The answer is simple. For these young students – the link between football and science could be the key to motivating them to pursue a career in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

That’s the concept behind the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) BLOSSOMS project, a program we started in 2008 with the primary goal of improving STEM education in secondary schools. The idea was that if we could show more young students how STEM subjects connect to the real world, then perhaps more would become engaged and interested in the field.

Clearly, we were onto something. A new study released just this past January found parents who talk with their high schoolers about the relevance of science and math can increase competency and career interest in STEM fields. The findings showed a significant difference in the number of elective, advanced math and science courses taken, such as calculus, statistics, and physics. Those same students were also more likely to have STEM career aspirations.

Getting Started with Snapchat in your Classroom - MindShift

Getting Started with Snapchat in your Classroom - MindShift | ICT for Education and Development | Scoop.it
As teachers, we’ve all seen it in our classrooms: A student in the back of the room discreetly takes a selfie. We’ve probably all been frustrated by it at some point too. And many of us have probably wondered why our students are taking hundreds of pictures of themselves everyday.

Our students are using Snapchat, and what many educators fail to understand about the app is that students are not just taking a picture. They are having a conversation. They are telling a story.

Rather than being reactive about new technology in our classrooms, we should look for ways to be proactive and utilize Snapchat as a learning tool instead of viewing it as a distraction.
