The Potential Size and Diversity of the Internet of Things Mask Immediate Opportunities for IT Leaders

Cameron Blanks's insight:

Another Gartner provides us with their usual detailed insight into the internet of things, in which I believe Gartner correctly predicts one of the most increasingly fundamental roles to modern society, the internet of things is sure to have a large impact in business and society as whole, as machines communicates with each other to form vast networks of interconnecting devices that will run largely free of human input, and enhance our day to day lives as the potential for large amounts of data in the connected network to be monitored and interact with each other to seamlessly react to changes in the environment that they are designed for and complete tasks without the need for human inputs.

Cameron Blanks's insight:

Although the article may focus on 10 predictions affecting cloud computing in 2013, these areas of focus will most definitely carry over to 2014 and for years to come, as many businesses will not be leading the way with new technologies but rather as the article points out, many businesses will have to change their view of cloud computing from a "nice to have" to a "must have" business practice. Other important points will be the change to highly sought out IT enterprises as businesses adapt, and the need for integration of the cloud in mobile computing and the web services offered., and the software and data centers that IT developers will need to focus on to make this possible.

How Long Till The Revolution of 3D Printing? – infographic 3D printing has slowly started

Via WordPress SEO & Social Media
Cameron Blanks's insight:

While not a scholarly source, this info graphic still offers some interesting insights into the future of 3D printing, with sources to some more reliable websites such as Forbes and the government census. Some of the more significant things this graphic shows, that will need to be considered for those working with 3D printers is the need to protect the individuals and companies from product and design theft, as the current laws do not offer a full realistic protection from copyright theft so it will be up to IT department to secure and maintain the systems behind the 3D printing, to keep these designs in the companies hand. The graphic also offers some intriguing comparisons between the prediction of the stage in which 3D printers are currently adopted in society and that of the revolutionary growth we saw with personal computers. These two may well play out in a similar way, as  amazing developments are being made every day and the importance of 3D printers in our societies future increases, we may well see this comparison between the two come true, and experience another enormous growth similar to that once seen by the computer.

How Long Till The Revolution of 3D Printing? – infographic /@BerriePelser

Ben Raynes's curator insight, March 26, 2014 11:52 PM

A neat graphic using the adoption rates of the PC as a template for the trajectory of the 3D printer. If we were to believe this, we would currently be in an age of 'Innovators/Early Adopters' and would not reach the 1:1 3D Printer per person ratio until 2040.

The days of smart machines that can replace jobs many once thought only possible by humans are coming quickly, and people are seemingly ignoring it, according to the Gartner survey referenced in this article, that shows a large proportion of CEO's think of smart machines as simply a futurist fantasy, but its likely that this articles prediction are a very real future, in which the working middle class world will be revolutionized, and ignoring this will lead those in the IT industry to fall behind, but there are great opportunities for those who are ahead of the emergent technology and willing to take advantage of the possibilities that will be provided.
