We can't ignore the air pollution crisis in Africa's fast-growing megacities

Solutions from London or Los Angeles won't necessarily work in Lagos or Kinshasa as in Africa cars are only one part of the problem.

Megan Mattei GIS's curator insight, August 25, 6:13 PM

Although it claimed that there was not enough research to help prevent pollution in Africa, this article explained the contributions to pollution in Africa very well. Contributing factors to pollution in America, Asia and Europe are talked about frequently, but hearing about Africa as a major source is uncommon. The author of the article made it seem like Africa was just as big of a problem for pollution as very urbanized places like Los Angeles and London. Africa as a continent is not very urbanized, usually the reason behind pollution. Instead of automobiles and industry being a main source, burning trash, wild fires and even pollution magnifying plant emissions are the reasons for poor air quality. It will be interesting to see what steps Africa takes, if any due to their wealth, when solutions to their polluting are proposed.

Employment Density - #UrbanAge10 #tbt

In a little over 10 weeks the #UrbanAge10 #tbt campaign will provide an overview of 10 years of research! The Urban Age Programme has researched the link between the shape of cities and how people live in them for 10 years. A few weeks back we began with where people live. Modal split (the choices people make about how to travel) and transportation infrastructure followed, providing the background for looking at employment density today.     A tighter relationship between where people live and work can cut down commuting times and co
