The Kozol quotes are so incredibly true. Empathic teaching is about being present without being overbearing and intrusive.

Edutopia has been offering some great series of articles on a variety of topics. I find the idea of social-emotional learning to be one of their most interesting.Empathy is one of the 21st century skills that is best taught and modeled in our real world.
