May 28, 1956: Happy Birthday, Jerry Douglas! "Little Medley"

Transatlantic Sessions - S03E02 Little Medley.

Transatlantic Sessions 3 (Glasgow-based Pelicula Films Ltd for BBC Scotland, BBC4 and RTÉ) brings together the best of Nashville, Ireland and Scotland in a format developed by director Mike Alexander in previous series of Transatlantic Sessions that afforded, in the words of one critic, "a unique insight into the sheer joy of making music" and represented, as another more pithily put it, "the greatest backporch shows ever".

For the new series of six half-hour programmes, a beautiful old farm steading converted into a small concert/studio space at Strathgarry House near Killiecrankie in the Perthshire Highlands was chosen and top vocal and instrumental exponents of the Country and Celtic traditions gathered to rehearse and play together with no audience except themselves and a "resident" house-band of their peers. Music co-directors were Nashville's Jerry Douglas and Shetland's own Aly Bain.

May 27, 1948: Happy Birthday, Pete Sears! "Guatemala"

"Guatemala," a song and human rights video from the Pete Sears album "Watchfire", features Sears on piano, slide guitar and vocals, David Grisman on Mandolin, and Enrique "Quique" Cruz on Quena. Music was written by Pete Sears, and lyrics by Jeannette Sears.

The video was produced by Sears in 1988, right after his 13 year run as a member of Jefferson Starship. It was made by a non-profit video production company started by Sears, Jeannette Sears, film director Ray Telles, Mary McCue, and Mark Adler. It was a project of "Earth Island Institute" and was funded by Jerry Garcia and the Rex Foundation, and the Tides Foundation.

Hundreds of free copies were distributed globally at no charge to human rights organizations working to bring the genocide of the Mayan population of Guatemala to the attention of the world. Amnesty International recently played the video again as part of a presentation on Central America. Sears and his wife, Jeannette, have visited Guatemala many times since their first trip in 1978...just as civil war was breaking out.

May 28, 1945: Happy Birthday, John Fogerty! "Don't You Wish It Was True"

Don't You Wish It Was True...

"'Revival' is a 2007 studio album by American roots rock singer-songwriter/guitarist John Fogerty, and his first new album in three years. It is also the third album (the first two were compilation and live albums) since rejoining Fantasy Records. The album was released on October 2, 2007.

"The cover design echoes the silhouette design of Fogerty's first solo album The Blue Ridge Rangers. The first single from the album was 'Don't You Wish It Was True'. The album contains two war protest songs: 'Long Dark Night' and 'I Can't Take It No More', both of which speak out against the Bush administration and the Iraq War. The latter song contains a lyric that refers to one of his hits with CCR, by referring to Bush as a 'Fortunate Son.'"
