Because epistemology is a time-honored pastime of transmedia folk. And cross-media folk. And multimedia folk....

Kevin Moloney:  "I’ve written elsewhere that we’re living through a Cambrian Explosion in the ecology of media. [...]  And with this explosion has come a diversity of terms to describe new creations and new arrangements. Multimedia? Crossmedia? Transmedia? What is the difference? I get that question a lot, and it’s a good one."

Can you think of a better place to do a hackathon?
i-Docs's insight:

This hack (which we are doing in partnership with Storycode Paris and Cross Video Days; and the support of NUMA and the cultural services of the French Embassy in the US) will focus on the creative process around new media storytelling, how to get from a one-line idea to a basic prototype and an efficient pitch. Each team will be assigned to a professional mentor and have access to masterclasses, which will facilitate the creative process and create a space for regular feedback. Projects will be judged by a prestigious jury, with the criteria focusing on each team’s storytelling approach, innovation and execution during the closing night of Tribeca Hacks <Paris>. The top three projects being presented during the Cross Video Days Festival, June 19-20.

The Awra Amba Experience: collaboration, crowd-funding and community - i-Docs | Interactive Documentary (i-Docs) | Scoop.it
i-Docs's insight:

The Awra Amba Experience is an incredible project which I first encountered at i-Docs 2012, where Paulina Tervo (project producer/director/lead) presented the initial stages of the interactive documentary and introduced us to this inspiring community. Two years on and the project is nearing the end of a crowd-funding campaign that aims to get the interactive documentary finished and online.

I caught up with Paulina and Serdar Ferit (director/ cinematographer/editor) to see how the project has developed and how  crowd-funding has affected their overall process.

Can Interactive Films Hit the Emotional Mark? A First Look at the Projects at Tribeca Storyscapes 2014 | POV Blog | PBS | Interactive Documentary (i-Docs) | Scoop.it
I am always appreciative of documentaries that push the boundaries of the form, but experiencing them leaves me wondering too often: Can interactive documentaries make us feel something in the same way that traditional cinema can?
i-Docs's insight:

Lovely review of Choose your own Documentary - glad to see it's well received state side:

"Choose Your Own Documentary is a hybrid film and live performance whose path (one of a possible 1,500+) is determined by the audience through a series of choices made via remote control. The protagonist, Nathan Penlington, does a kind of live DVD commentary as he leads you through a series of short films about his search for the mysterious original owner of a collection of Choose Your Own Adventurebooks from the 1980′s that he secured on eBay.

I appreciate that the interactive device is not just a shtick — it has direct relevance to the story’s content. More importantly, the voting creates real audience engagement with a tale that is successful for some of the same reasons that many narrative films are – it is a personal story told by an authentic, vulnerable, relatable protagonist. And ultimately it has a traditional story arc with emotional peaks and valleys no matter what path the audience chooses."

Immigrant Nation - A collaborative interactive documentary

Immigrant Nation - A collaborative interactive documentary | Interactive Documentary (i-Docs) | Scoop.it

Immigrant Nation explores our connections to immigration, past and present, through storytelling.

At the heart of this project is a simple idea: the U.S. is a nation shaped by immigration, and most families have personal story about it. These stories, whether they happened generations ago or quite recently, are not often shared. We want to bring them to the surface - exploring the interconnectedness of these narratives.

Immigrant Nation has three components:
- this web site
- a series of short documentary films
- live events in schools, museums, libraries, film festivals and other public spaces designed to engage diverse communities in sharing their immigrant stories
