MIT TechTV – FoE5: The Futures of Nonfiction Storytelling

MIT TechTV – FoE5: The Futures of Nonfiction Storytelling | Interactive Documentary (i-Docs) | Scoop.it

Digital communication has arguably impacted the lives of journalists more than any other media practitioner. But new platforms and ways of circulating content are providing vast new opportunities for journalists and documentarians. How have–and might–nonfiction storytellers incorporate many of the emerging strategies of transmedia storytelling and audience participation from marketing and entertainment, and what experiments are currently underway that are showing the potential paths forward?

Cloud Filmmaking: a post from Mandy Rose

Cloud Filmmaking: a post from Mandy Rose | Interactive Documentary (i-Docs) | Scoop.it

In a recent blog post – Stop Making Docs -  Brian Newman argued that the era of the short doc has arrived. With the web, shareable media, mobile exhibition, he argues, the longer and feature length documentaires that dominate festivals are no longer where it’s at, if the aim is to reach an audience and make an impact. His alternative, “Make me a really interesting website, that happens to have maybe 20 minutes total of video. In 3 minute segments. Let me trade it, use it, share it, on my phone. Let it actually have an impact instead of just stroking your and your funder’s egos. Let it be interesting and aware of today’s realities. Let it be useful. Let it never play a film festival. Ever.”

Looking Under The Hood: Creativity, Code and Impact | Interactive Documentary (i-Docs) | Scoop.it

"Ingrid Kopp, director of Digital Initiatives at Tribeca Film Institute opened our minds in her presentation Looking Under the Hood: Creativity, Code and Impact. With the emergence of the “maker culture” the way in which we tell and interact with stories is evolving. Find out how in the video below…"

From Power to the Pixel, a 27 min. video.

A really exciting and forward-looking issue.

Some crucial key points of her speech are:

- Hacking Culture: the web should not only be used but also created. We want to be involved into hacking culture.

New way of working as filmmaker storytellers

- know (basic) coding gives you a new language to talk with web developers and designers when you are working with them

- collaboration

- digital access

excerpts:

"Involve your audience in a meaningful way

Think about design & user experience

Experiment with new tools

Learn to love code

Make the web, don't just use it

And above all keep creating, experimenting & playing"

"Tell me and I will forget,

Show me and I may remember,

Involve me ad I will understand"

Society is Numb to Traditional Media - Danfung Dennis - Condition One

Danfung Dennis, well known for directing the documentary "Hell and Back Again", share some of his principles on technology and emotion:

"We're moving to this era of mobile and tablet computing

the changes are the same to when radio moved to broadcast, we had an opportunity to create an entirely format and new way of storytelling (…)

How do we redefine how we tell stories, how we connect and how we convey emotion?

The technology will drive the future of storytelling"

In 2011 Danfung Dennis "and three business partners co-founded the tech start-up Condition ONE to create an “immersive,” virtual reality-esque application for tablet devices that allows users to scroll around video footage with a wider field of vision." [from Kevin Ritchie post on Realscreen - http://bit.ly/PXhond ]

Big River Rising - Christian Aid

Big River Rising - Christian Aid | Interactive Documentary (i-Docs) | Scoop.it

On 7 August 2012, extreme monsoon rainfall devastated Metro Manila in the Philippines, forcing nearly 700,000 people to evacuate their homes.

To mark this year’s Earth Science Week and International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, Christian Aid has produced Big River Rising, an inspiring story that follows 52 year old mother-of-five Belen de Guzman as she nervously monitors the rising water as it threatens Banaba, the informal settlement community where she lives.

Trained by Christian Aid partner the Centre for Disaster Preparedness, Belen helps coordinate the evacuation of her community while her own shantytown home disappears beneath the floodwaters.

Using an interactive multimedia approach, Big River Rising explores how rapid and uncontrolled urban development, mountain deforestation, mining activities and global climatic changes are making Metro Manila and its poorest communities more vulnerable to flooding disasters.

Education-Migration, explore for yourself in a unique Interactive Documentary "Convenient Education"

Education-Migration, explore for yourself in a unique Interactive Documentary "Convenient Education" | Interactive Documentary (i-Docs) | Scoop.it
Convenient Education is an interactive documentary about a scheme that promised so much. A young skilled workforce who would train themselves to do the jobs Australians don’t want to do. Convenient Education is about the business of opportunities and nation building in a young globalised world and the consequences of our desire to better ourselves. Shot in India and Australia over several years, the interactive documentary tracks a study abroad journey from Jalandhar, India to Melbourne, Australia. In 2009, before the international education crisis hits, we experience the phenomena of a bustling education-migration market extending from India to Australia, and interrogate the context that led to its rise. Louis Dai (co-director), as the son of Vietnamese boat people, provides a compelling narrative lead as he weaves the experiences of student-migrants into a larger Australian immigration story.

17,000 Islands: an interactive experiment in documentary image making

17,000 Islands: an interactive experiment in documentary image making | Interactive Documentary (i-Docs) | Scoop.it

The Taman Mini Indonesia Indah or “Beautiful Indonesia Miniature Park” is a theme park built in 1972 to represent the 17.000 Islands that make up the archipelago of Indonesia. It is a manicured synopsis of Indonesian culture and geography – offering national and international tourists an opportunity to experience the richness of Indonesian culture in a one-stop-shop recreational site.

Fascinated by this concept of idealized representation of culture, the filmmakers Edwin (Indonesia) and Thomas Østbye (Norway) embarked on a documentary project that set out to capture some life within this controlled setting. Their documentary project explores the act of creating an image of a nation, of looking at the relationship between models of reality and reality itself. In 17.000 Islands Interactive, the filmmakers will invite you to participate in the process of image making.

When 17.000 Islands Interactive launches in early 2013, it will be your turn to reinterpret the filmmakers’ impressions. The web platform becomes in many ways a metaphor for the Park – a beautiful controlled environment that gives you the illusion of authenticity. Here, you will be invited to explore and manipulate the documentary footage in a cutting edge, experimental, virtual world, weaving-in your own interpretations and context.

To keep up with their progress follow the blog here: http://17000islandsinteractive.com/preview/index.php/blog/
