Interesting question - More interesting is to study what happens to culture and artistic work when it meets new  media.

I work with the traditional art of storytelling, and study what happens when it´s performed in new digital media.

i-Docs's insight:

"Interactive documentary, or transmedia, or whatever we call it, is still bleeding edge. It'll get a name, as The Goggles told us, once "a lot of people actually like what they see and say to themselves, ‘I want more of that.'" Story is the anchor of the experience, don't forget; don't overwhelm users with too many choices"

Can Interactive Films Hit the Emotional Mark? A First Look at the Projects at Tribeca Storyscapes 2014 | POV Blog | PBS | Interactive Documentary (i-Docs) | Scoop.it
I am always appreciative of documentaries that push the boundaries of the form, but experiencing them leaves me wondering too often: Can interactive documentaries make us feel something in the same way that traditional cinema can?
i-Docs's insight:

Lovely review of Choose your own Documentary - glad to see it's well received state side:

"Choose Your Own Documentary is a hybrid film and live performance whose path (one of a possible 1,500+) is determined by the audience through a series of choices made via remote control. The protagonist, Nathan Penlington, does a kind of live DVD commentary as he leads you through a series of short films about his search for the mysterious original owner of a collection of Choose Your Own Adventurebooks from the 1980′s that he secured on eBay.

I appreciate that the interactive device is not just a shtick — it has direct relevance to the story’s content. More importantly, the voting creates real audience engagement with a tale that is successful for some of the same reasons that many narrative films are – it is a personal story told by an authentic, vulnerable, relatable protagonist. And ultimately it has a traditional story arc with emotional peaks and valleys no matter what path the audience chooses."

Immigrant Nation - A collaborative interactive documentary

Immigrant Nation - A collaborative interactive documentary | Interactive Documentary (i-Docs) | Scoop.it

Immigrant Nation explores our connections to immigration, past and present, through storytelling.

At the heart of this project is a simple idea: the U.S. is a nation shaped by immigration, and most families have personal story about it. These stories, whether they happened generations ago or quite recently, are not often shared. We want to bring them to the surface - exploring the interconnectedness of these narratives.

Immigrant Nation has three components:
- this web site
- a series of short documentary films
- live events in schools, museums, libraries, film festivals and other public spaces designed to engage diverse communities in sharing their immigrant stories

i-Docs's insight:

“All we know is that traditional rules of filmmaking no longer apply,” Danfung said. “We’re focused on the technical aspect to begin with as there are still big challenges in the capture, workflow, and playback … but I think the even bigger challenge is the new visual language that is going to emerge.”

Stephen Kleckner:  "It’s alluring to see this 360-degree medium as limitless, but this borderless world is not as free of structure as it first appears. Artists face a new set of rules to play by if they intend on creating an intentional, visual, virtual-reality composition."

i-Docs's insight:

This question/answer combination is great:

“Why make an experimental documentary and not a feature film?”

The answer to that would be that the structure of the project arose organically to match the sprawling nature of the subject matter. It’s not just the time of movies right now, since we have long form TV and online video, and all kinds of new forms coming up. Because it is distributed across so many platforms, Empire is very much of this time.
