Ray Scott's Iconic Alabama Resort-Estate for Sale

Ray Scott's Iconic Alabama Resort-Estate for Sale | Hunting and Fishing in Alabama | Scoop.it

Ray Scott's Trophy Bass Retreat is a "sportsman's paradise." Presidents have fished its fertile lakes, and in 2010 Outdoor Life named its 55-acre fishery the best bass lake in America.

ItHappensinAlabama's insight:

This is so sad to hear Ray Scott is selling the World Famous retreat. I have enjoyed visiting Ray, both Jim's and Vickie at what I call "A Slice of Heaven". Both Presidents Bush and their wives have stayed and fished at Ray’s and Venture Outdoors TV Show has filmed many episodes here. We filmed the Alabama vs. Auburn fish off here. What a wonderful day that was! The all female bass lake is the one that amazes me! I have never seen such big bass in all my life. I pray that whomever buys this place will continue to take care of the bass and deer, just as Ray and his team has.

Under proposed red snapper regulations, everyone loses

Under proposed red snapper regulations, everyone loses | Hunting and Fishing in Alabama | Scoop.it

Federal red snapper seasons are too short and recreational fishermen deserve better. But contrary to what you may have heard, help is not on the way.

ItHappensinAlabama's insight:

With Alabama local seafood popularity at an all time high, this looks like a mess! "Amendment 28 could shift millions of pounds of sustainably caught red snapper away from the commercial sector and the consumers they serve, exclusively to boat-owning private fishermen." It should not be an argument between "commercial" and "recreational" fishermen, because the fact is that the vast majority of red snapper are harvested by some degree of commercial fishing, whether it be a boat specifically used to catch market fish or a charter boat for hire by individuals. Either way, money is changing hands for the resource.

What are your thoughts?

Amendments give Alabama voters chance to further enshrine rights to hunt, fish and own guns in state constitution

Amendments give Alabama voters chance to further enshrine rights to hunt, fish and own guns in state constitution | Hunting and Fishing in Alabama | Scoop.it
"Hunting and fishing are huge industries in the state and country. A lot of people don't understand or realize that excise taxes (on hunting and fishing equipment) fund the conservation department. It's a big deal. It's a positive economic impact for the state and we're trying to enshrine the right to hunt and fish for the future," he said.
ItHappensinAlabama's insight:

Alabama voters will have the opportunity in a couple of weeks to vote yes or no on strengthening their right to hunt and fish. One other proposal on the ballot potentially impacting the rights of hunters, shooters and gun owners is Amendment 3. It Happens in Alabama encourages you to get familiar with these Amendments, share them with your family and friends and vote Yes on both at the polls.

The Spawn is on! --The BASS are in sight

The Spawn is on! --The BASS are in sight | Hunting and Fishing in Alabama | Scoop.it

Bass spawn from late March into early May in much of the state, and the spawn typically takes place at depths of 1 to 8 feet, usually over firm bottom with some nearby grass, woody cover or other protection for the fry when they hatch. Most lakes are clear enough to allow anglers to spot the beds and the fish at depths of 1 to 3 feet

ItHappensinAlabama's insight:

Alabama stakes claim to some of the best bass fishing in the world. During the spawn, I hope our fisherman will keep in mind "catch and release", on the bigger fish. Jim Liner, the biologist at Ray Scott's Trophy Bass retreat did say that we need to thin the schools, less the fish get stressed and stop growing large. Let's keep those good genetics going.

OUTDOORS; Signs point to perfect conditions for crappie fishing

OUTDOORS; Signs point to perfect conditions for crappie fishing | Hunting and Fishing in Alabama | Scoop.it
If reels aren’t greased, batteries charged and boats cleaned out they should be, said Jay Haffner district fisheries supervisor in this area for the Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries.
ItHappensinAlabama's insight:

Alabama has some of the best Crappie Fishing in the nation! For me it is more about a delicious dinner and stocking the freezer than fighting the fish. Each year we have fisherman that come to Lake Jordan, camp out and fill their coolers with the limit, every day. The best tactic I have seen is trolling between 4 and 14 feet, in a secret place I can not reveal, where the fish are suspended.

Before filling your cooler, make sure you know the Law.

Crappie Limit per day: 30
(It is illegal to possess any Crappie less than nine inches in total length taken from Alabama public waters, including Aliceville Reservoir and Pickwick Reservoir. Waters exempt from the nine-inch Crappie limit include impoundments less than 500 surface acres, and the reciprocal waters of the Chattahoochee River and Impoundments and their tributaries, Bear Creek Reservoir (Big Bear Lake of the B.C.D.A. Lakes), Lake Jackson at Florala and Weiss Reservoir. See exception for Weiss Reservoir.
