Food as a Social Relation

Food as a Social Relation | The Errant Diner | Scoop.it

Paolo Payofelin Espanola's insight:

A better way of explaining our food porn addiction.

How to be a better food writer - The eGullet Culinary Institute (eGCI)

How to be a better food writer - The eGullet Culinary Institute (eGCI) | The Errant Diner | Scoop.it

"People always ask me how they can become food writers. My answer: write. It’s that simple, yet I’m amused and amazed at how many people who want to be food writers never sit theirs asses in a chair and write. The desire to write is enough for them. Dilettantes abound, I guess. But I can’t stress this enough: If you want to be a writer, then write. Set aside time everyday and never let anything get in the way. Not you wife, lover, partner, day job, the lottery, paroxysms of despair or loneliness. Nothing. It’s the only way you’ll be able to see your strengths and weakness, and it’s the only way you’ll improve."

Why You Should Feel Like Royalty When Dining Out

Why You Should Feel Like Royalty When Dining Out | The Errant Diner | Scoop.it

When you think of the last time you dined out at a restaurant, what are the things that stick out most in your mind? Is it the food, either good or bad, that leaves a lasting impression, determining whether or not you will return in the future? Is it the service that was offered? Was your waiter friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable about the food, or were you ignored and brushed off as just another nuisance in the life of your server?? All of these are expectable questions, and the answers to most are just as common, but have you ever really thought about what goes into the plate that is brought to your table?

Scientists Predict That Food Riots Will Grip The Planet Within A Year

Scientists Predict That Food Riots Will Grip The Planet Within A Year | The Errant Diner | Scoop.it

A few years ago, Sir John Beddington, the UK government’s chief scientific advisor stated that with the world’s population growing, food supplies diminishing, and water supplies becoming more scarce, all of these factors would combine to form a ‘perfect storm’ in 2030 resulting in food shortages and rioting. However, the New England Complex Systems Institute believes he is way too optimistic with his timing. In fact, the complexity theorists think that if we don’t reverse the current trend in food prices, we’ve got until August 2013 before social unrest sweeps the planet.

recipe writing cheat sheet

recipe writing cheat sheet | The Errant Diner | Scoop.it

I think some of you need a few more recipe writing pointers. Wait, fix that — I think you just need a cheat sheet. I’ve written about common recipe writing errors before, but maybe that was too wordy. Here is a power list, straight to the point. Copy it. Print it out. Tape it next to your computer screen for when you’re writing recipes. And follow it until it becomes second nature. I know you can do it. No touchy-feely stuff here, just the nuts and bolts.

Paolo Payofelin Espanola's insight:

Just started to realize how challenging it is to write a recipe as it requires you to not make the assumption that any one step is self-explanatory.

How to Wear an Office Suit at Night

How to Wear an Office Suit at Night | The Errant Diner | Scoop.it

If you have plans after work, you probably don't have time to run home first, so you're stuck in the same suit from 8 a.m. to midnight. But you don't want to look like a junior analyst at the bar (even if you are one)—and you're not fooling anyone by stuffing your tie in your pocket. So we transformed three of the most common suits in a man's office wardrobe—navy, charcoal, and khaki—into three fresh going-out ensembles just by adding, or losing, a few small things.

What Does Organic Really Mean, and Is It Worth My Money?

What Does Organic Really Mean, and Is It Worth My Money? | The Errant Diner | Scoop.it

Your friends are right: organic food does have some benefits, but depending on what your friends told you, some may be bigger than others. For example, there's a lot of controversy around a new study published by the American College of Physicians that reviewed over 200 studies and determined that organic foods do not have higher vitamin or mineral content than the same foods grown using conventional methods.

However, that's one piece in a much bigger puzzle when it comes to your personal buying habits. It's a sticky topic, but let's start with what exactly it means to be "organic," and then try to help you decide if you should buy organic or not.
