Slater is an aspiring therapy dog, and so far he's rocking his program.

With Humane K9, Inc. trainer Marni Bellavia, the 2-year-old pup has practiced staying calm in busy restaurants, accepting affection from strangers, and remaining in the sitting position while his owners enjoy dinner. At this rate, he could become a certified therapy dog in the spring.

In fact, in her decades of experience training dogs, Bellavia says Slater "far exceeds" other students with his great temperament and ability to get along with other dogs. However, all this may not matter in Miami-Dade County: Slater is a pit bull, a breed that has been banned from living in Miami-Dade for the past 23 years.

“It’s the worst feeling in the world," Bellavia said. "It’s discrimination on every level.”...

Via Kyraocity Works: Google Book’s Ngram Viewer: Fascinating Play on Words.

I love words. I love dictionaries. I scored highest on my verbal scores on my SATs and GREs as well as a psychological indicator for ADD I took in my first years of being a professor. I thought I h..." ...Anyone seen Google Books Ngram Viewer. Enter a word and map its appearances in literature since 1800s. I tried out some risque words dealing with race, gender, and identity.

With the Ngram Viewer, you can type in a single term or separate terms you want to compare with a comma. This tool is case-sensitive, so be sure you have the word you want right spelled correctly case-wise.

First I typed in “nigger.” The graph spikes in the 1860s, the 1940s and the 1970s. Could go back and analyze what was happening historically and sociologically in those periods that affected their spikes in literature. the 1860s is around the peak of the institution of slavery if my memory serves me well.

Next, I typed in “African.” Made the mistake of entering it lowercase at first and what I got at first justified my bias about Western views of Africa, but the capital “A” made for more accurate representation though the graph was not that much better in the big picture of things. The word “African” barely registers anything significant until the 1960s–perhaps due to the rise of black power movements in the US and African American scholars entering the literary fray. Then the graph shows a steep incline in the late 1950s with a significant dip in the 1990s. ,

The word “bitch,” a word people are afraid to use for dogs but it household parlance on daytime and evening TV for women and their male offspring, those “sons” of witches, shows on a graph as a steep and steady incline since the 1920s, before that it was pretty leveled off and low by comparison.
I went back and compared “nigger” and “whiteness” and found the graph of these two terms quite revealing.....

For years, New Jersey barred U.S.-born college students from receiving state financial aid if their parents were in this country illegally. Last week, a state court of appeals put an end to that misguided policy, finding that education officials had wrongly denied aid to an 18-year-old student born and raised in the United States because her Guatemalan mother is an undocumented immigrant. Though it is binding only in New Jersey, the ruling should serve as a warning to other states — such as Florida, where U.S.-born residents are required to pay out-of-state college tuition simply because their parents are undocumented.

The 14th Amendment states: "All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside."...

The ‘slippery path’ toward the Nazis’ extermination program holds important lessons for today, says Tulane School of Medicine head......Killing “incurables” in Nazi Germany became policy in 1939, starting with children with birth defects. Between 1939 and 1945, Nazi doctors and nurses killed more than 5,000 children, according to the exhibit. A typed file card from the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Brain Research acknowledges receipt of 697 children’s brains from one institution.

An estimated 200,000 adults in hospitals and mental institutions were gassed, starved or overdosed in hospitals, according to the exhibit.

Others died in the medical experiments carried out at Nazi death camps by Dr. Josef Mengele — the Auschwitz “Angel of Death” — and others.

Holocaust Survivor Designs Resources for Teachers

A few weeks ago, we received a letter from Holocaust survivor Peter Fischl, who has spent the last 18 years sharing his history and working to promote Holocaust education. We looked through Teaching Now and realized that it hadn't included coverage on Holocaust education before, so we decided to give Fischl a call.

Fischl took some time to speak with me about his past work and the new Holocaust education resource he just designed. The education kit, called "Man's Inhumanity to Man," is Fischl's most recent project and somewhat of a summation of his efforts over the years.....
