Mica Pollock, editor of Everyday Antiracism: Getting Real About Race in School, calls on educators to develop an “everyday consciousness” about the relevance of race in schools. Be aware, ask questions and “keep inquiring,” says Pollock, who is the director of the Center for Research on Educational Equity, Assessment and Teaching Excellence at the University of California, San Diego.

 

Pollock offers four questions as a starting point for assessing and addressing institutional racism in a school setting:

This is an article written about segregation of black and whites in schools in America. Even though schools in Australia aren't as extreme as this with racism there's still important things to be learnt from this article. Main issues could be discussed in a humanities class, or any class for that matter.

This website is specifically for kids, a teacher could use it to get ideas from but it would be great for students to play around on to learn a little more about history. It's engaging as there are games and puzzles that are on many different historical events. I think students would enjoy playing games and they would be learning at the same time.

First Australians is a very informative and researched TV series that depicts what happened when the British landed in Australia and the events that followed. It is a great way to get an idea of what happened and to understand our history a little bit better. You can buy the DVD and the book at the SBS shop, or watch it online through the link provided.

YouTube is a great tool for students and teachers to use. There are thousands and thousands of videos that cover all of the important topics being taught in schools and they make great resources for learning. Although you have to be careful students are watching appropriate things on YouTube, it is still a great tool, possibly better if a teacher is in control of what the students are watching.

This is a good news story to discuss with a class in humanities as it covers a very touchy issue.... racism. This would make a great discussion, to see whether students think this is racist or incorrect. It might get them thinking about how they treat others.
