A Debate Over A 'Controversial' Ad Just Got Owned By A Bunch Of Kids | Humanities | Scoop.it
After being confronted with racism, these kids say what I wish everyone thought.
Angel Gutszmit's insight:

Absolutely love this video ! It is an eye opener. Yes there is still so much racism happening in our world and it is very sad. I can already see how I would integrate this video into a classroom setting. I would reenact this clip with my class. Once I get their answers I will show them this video and ask the students to compare the answers.

Insight - I'm Not Racist, But...

Aren't we all a little bit racist? Insight: Tuesdays at 8:30pm on SBS One http://www.sbs.com.au/insight
Angel Gutszmit's insight:

An insight episoode on racism and how we are all just that little bit racist. Too long to show the whole episode but little snippets that the teacher can use during the lesson can be shown. This is more of a resource for teachers to aid in their understanding of the issue, and use this knowledge to portray to the students. In this episode it shows how there are many types of people in our world and how some believe things that are really wrong even if people are entitled to their own opinion.

Angel Gutszmit's insight:

In secondary school, I did attend the Jewish Holocaust Centre as an excursion that was linked in the topic we were learning about at school. One of the best excursions I have ever been on. An education program like the one provided at JHC is one that I will always remember. Hearing an amazing woman speak about her devastating ordeal, surviving a concentration camp during WW2. She pulled her sleeve up and there in front of my eyes she had a brand, a specific number code embedded into her skin. WW2 is a special topic to me as it is close to my heart. Having the reassurance that yes the holocaust was a true event is a great way of engaging students and gaining their uttermost attention. I can not recommend this centre enough !!

The man who wants to start a conversation about racism

The man who wants to start a conversation about racism | Humanities | Scoop.it
Tim Soutphommasane wants to encourage others to think deeply about national identity.
Angel Gutszmit's insight:

A really interesting article to discuss with the older year primary students. Questions can be asked based around the article and students can benefit from reading about racism and the new race discrimination commissioner beliefs on the topic. I believe this man will make a difference to this country even if it is only little, because I completely agree with him when he says, "''We don't often think about just how harmful racism is, it's a very civic harm. Belittling someone or making someone feel like they're a second-class citizen detracts from our social cohesion and harmony as a community.'

Private schooling myth debunked

Private schooling myth debunked | Humanities | Scoop.it
Children who attend private primary schools don't perform any better in NAPLAN tests.
Angel Gutszmit's insight:

An article stating new research findings that private school students don't perform better on NAPLAN testing. The results showed that "children of a healthy birth weight, who grew up in higher socio-economic circumstances in homes filled with books and had mothers who didn't work long hours who performed best at NAPLAN." It just goes to show that Nature provides a more consistent role than nurture in children's cognitive outcomes.

I watch TED talks regularly now because of the fact I find them really informative but in a fun way, if that makes any sense. I would most definitely show these videos to my future student because they are educational but not the boring kind. I believe my students will enjoy these videos because they are fun and engaging, sometimes there are jokes and puns that are quite funny.
