Thailand: Mobile technologies for food security, agriculture and rural development: Role of the public sector | e-Agriculture | Human Security | Scoop.it

The regional workshop on “Mobile Technologies for food security, agriculture and rural development”, held in Bangkok from 3 to 4 April 2012, brought together senior officials from the Ministries of Agriculture and allied ministries to share examples of the use of mobile technologies used in their countries, in both public and private sectors, for agricultural information services.

The examples quoted in this publication provide an indicative list of the types of services available, and are by no means a comprehensive analysis of relevant activities in the countries concerned. The aim was to use some cases mentioned during the workshop to achieve a common understanding of the state of the art in these Asian countries, taking account of the tremendous increase in the adoption of mobile phones for delivering agricultural information services.

Their discussion generated the following insights and recommendations:

Nation's priority is skill development, Food Security can't feed India: Modi | IBNLive

Nation's priority is skill development, Food Security can't feed India: Modi | IBNLive | Human Security | Scoop.it

Taking a dig at UPA government's ambitious food security programme, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi said India's priority is skill development and merely bringing in the Bill would not feed the needy.

Modi, who was recently appointed as the BJP's election campaign committee chief for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, talked about the lack of skill development in the country. He said the perception that a person who has a certificate is talented and skilled is wrong. "The nation's priority is skill development. We have 65 per cent youth in our country. They are hard working but they lack skills. They have certificates. The Central government thinks that a certificate by itself grants a person skills for employment, just like they believe that the Food Security legislation by itself can feed the nation," Modi said.

Citing the example of the US, the BJP leader said that India should also try to use the research work of its students in the development of the country. "It's unfortunate that India has not used the research work of its students in the development of the nation...Research plays a very important role in a country's development," he said.

Though efforts like this may be difficult to get started, they prove to be well worth it in the long run. Geothermal energy is a resource that many countries already use and still has a lot of potential. An idea like this is great for everyone not just these few countries. PC

Clayton Nelson's curator insight, February 11, 10:10 AM

It doesn't get any better than that. A renewable resource that is cost efficient, good for the enviorment, and awesome.CN
