Immigration - Key Measures - "Proportion of adults working"

Immigration - Key Measures - "Proportion of adults working" | Human rights | Scoop.it

PROPORTION OF ADULTS WORKING

"Proportion of adults working" is a measure of labor force participation that includes those not seeking work. Immigrants work in many low skill and high skill jobs, from milking cows to performing surgery.

Some face barriers to working such as limited English or transferable skills. In addition, cultural norms or family size may affect mothers' workforce participation when children are young. As the workforce shrinks, immigrants will help fill critical workforce needs.

Jeff Makana's insight:
Recently in the Jura a Psychiatric facility was closed due to gross human rights violations but no one has been persecuted though the facility was closed down for six months. CRPD prohibits forced psychiatric interventions under Articles 12, 14, 17 and 25. The authority of the CRPD in this regard is also recognized by the Special Rapporteur on Torture, who has recognized that forced and non consensual psychiatric interventions and detention may amount to torture and ill-treatment.  The Rapporteur disallowed the defense of "therapeutic necessity" as a justification for forced or non consensual interventions, recognizing that acts of torture may be masked by "good intentions" of health professionals.  People with psychosocial disabilities have a right to maintain their physical and mental integrity as a fundamental right of personhood.  Forced and non consensual administration of mind-altering drugs, electroshock and psycho-surgery are acts of violence that penetrate deeply into the structure of a person's consciousness, brain, body and self.  The purpose of such interventions is always discrimination, since it is based on a judgment that some kinds of human emotion, consciousness and self-presentation are "wrong" and cannot be allowed to exist. We have to ask, What is the status of international human rights law in the domestic courts and tribunals, when it conflicts with domestic law?  How can courts and tribunals best give effect to the CRPD/CRC  standards in their jurisdiction?

Human Rights Watch: migrants and refugees destitute and harassed in Calais - European Council on Refugees and Exiles

Human Rights Watch: migrants and refugees destitute and harassed in Calais - European Council on Refugees and Exiles | Human rights | Scoop.it

Asylum seekers and migrants living in destitution in Calais have told Human Rights Watch they have been abused by the French police. Migrants describe being beaten and attacked with pepper spray in the street or when they are found hidden in trucks in the hope of traveling to the United Kingdom.

The police checked the truck and found me… I said, ‘please, help me’ but they beat me and I collapsed outside the truck. They kicked me on the ground”, Rosa, from Eritrea, told Human Rights Watch from a Calais hospital.

OpenEvsys – for documenting human rights violations.

OpenEvsys – for documenting human rights violations. | Human rights | Scoop.it
Jeff Makana's insight:

OpenEvSys is a free and open source database application developed by HURIDOCS that human rights NGOs can use to:

Record human rights violations and store related documents

Browse the history of a particular victim or perpetrator

Analyse trends and patterns of abuse

Track their interventions by status, impact, deadline, etc.

Features

OpenEvsys can be a run from web server, making it easier for NGOs to share and collaborate from multiple office locations. But it can also be run from a local server or a single computer if needed.

OpenEvsys has a very powerful search. You can filter events, violations, victims, perpetrators or interventions. And you can also count: for example it can produce a breakdown of all your acts of torture by gender of victim or by type of perpetrator or by date or by province.

Additionally, OpenEvsys allows you to explore your data with a faceted search that is linked to charts and maps, helping you identify patterns and creating outputs for your website, reports and advocacy campaigns.
