How the movement evolved: UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. | Human rights | Scoop.it
Jeff Makana's insight:
The Mad, Users and Survivors movement has achieved much yet money and influence has turned the movement into an elite circle selectively advocating for some and discriminating against others within the UN mechanisms.

What is peer support when we take advantage of people's moments of evident crisis to render judgement to isolate and make them invisible?

The continued torturous treatments today in Psychiatry, the loss of freedom and dignity, the misuse of seclusion and restraints, the neurological damage caused by drugs have been dismissed or ignored by elites at the top of the movements and organizations.

Carlos Batara's curator insight, October 25, 2015 12:03 AM

Long enough is long enough.

It would be nice if a plan to create a safe environment for Somali refugees to return home developed momentum and became reality.

In the United States, Somalia is the longest-standing country under Temporary Protected Status (TPS) status.

Yet, our government has seen fit to keep them second-class residents, refusing to grant them a path to permanent residency and citizenship.  Instead, 18-month extensions of limited Somali TPS benefits is the best we offer them.

The U.S. is only housing 250 – 300 Somalia immigrants under TPS.  A legalization path for such a small number would not place an undue burden U.S. resources.

But in the absence of such compassion, why not a plan to bring Somali residents back home?

Basil Blythman's curator insight, February 16, 2016 9:25 PM

People have human rights, but what ISIS are doing is just wrong! Executing people on landmines! How would they feel if they were executing on landmines! This is a matter of social justice and human rights and the government has to do something about it. We cannot allow this to happen anymore. We have to put a stop to it before more lives are put at risk. ISIS is pure evil and is using there resources to slaughter innocent civilians trying to live their lives in peace. This has escalated to quickly and we can not let it escalate more. Please help these people.

My love/hate relationship with Barack Obama

My love/hate relationship with Barack Obama | Human rights | Scoop.it
I campaigned for Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012. I will never forget the tears that streamed down my face when, after a long day of "Get Out The Vote" door-knocking in Chicagoland’s American Muslim neighborhoods, I watched him walk out on stage in Grant Park on the television screen in my family’s living room. A person with a name like mine was elected President of the United States.
