OHS education and training promotes positive worker practices | Institute for Work & Health

A systematic review from the Institute for Work & Health confirms that education and training lead to safer practices among workers. However, on their own, they might not reduce work-related injuries and illnesses. That makes education and training only one part, albeit an important part, of an effective occupational health and safety program.

Lisa Tonkin's insight:

Great article.  In HR we focus a lot on training and education but, as with most HR principles, everything is not so black and white.

Beck Weaver's curator insight, July 3, 2014 8:46 PM

Training is just an administrative control and needs to be considered as part of a larger prevention and mitigation strategy that is supported by the application of other risk controls (using hierarchy of controls)

Why a Texas fertilizer plant explosion like the one in West could happen again - 2013-Sep-30

Why a Texas fertilizer plant explosion like the one in West could happen again - 2013-Sep-30 | Human Resources (OH&S) | Scoop.it
The explosion of a fertilizer plant in West, Texas, in April 2013 seemed like a freak accident. In reality, Texas has more than 100 similar facilities — and any one ...
Lisa Tonkin's insight:

This article hits close to home for me.  I live in a mining town and often feel the shakes of mine explosions.  A lot of my friends along with my husband work in mining and the fear of them getting hurt is very high.  Having worked on mine sites myself I'm proud to say the degree of safety training and risk assessment is so detailed it puts my mind at ease.  Of course incidents still occur but I think in all of the ones I have seen first hand; they have been managed properly and the outcome has always been better than could be imagined.  A lot of people I know get frustrated at the degree some companies take their safety precautions and others often laugh at how strict they can be but I think it's great.  I love knowing that my friends and family know how to protect themselves and each other.

WorkSafeBC.com - When to return to work

WorkSafeBC.com - When to return to work | Human Resources (OH&S) | Scoop.it
Return to work programs take all injuries and illnesses into account.
Lisa Tonkin's insight:

From a HR perspective I think it can be very hard for both parties to be on the same page.  I have seen cases where the employee feels as though they are ready to return to work but are yet to receive a doctors approval and others where the doctor has given the all clear but the employee doesn't feel ready.  The key is good communication throughout the whole process :)

Lisa Tonkin's insight:

I work in an office environment and I cannot believe how many incidents actually occur.  One of my friends recently tripped over a vacuum cleaner cord and fractured her wrist.  Needless to say we are all a lot more careful but its terrible to think that something so dramatic had to happen for us to change our habits.

OHS - Human Resources - ANU | Human Resources (OH&S) | Scoop.it
Lisa Tonkin's insight:

It's always a good idea to involve staff when planning OHS.  If employees are involved from the beginning not only do they feel more connected to the organisation but they are also more likely to remember what they have been taught and teach others.

Lisa Tonkin's insight:

OH & S practices have become the topic of many jokes and pranks in the last few years but there's no denying we all want to come home from work safe and unharmed.  I love seeing new and creative ways to teach and train staff as long as the take home message is always the same - OH & S is the responsibility of both staff and companies, all incidents are preventable, and the safety of a person should always come first.

Rights and Obligations

Rights and Obligations | Human Resources (OH&S) | Scoop.it
Lisa Tonkin's insight:

All employees should know their rights when it comes to workplace safety but they must understand they have obligations as well.  Working in HR I have seen many cases where an employee will get a union involved in a workplace injury matter only to realise they were the ones actually at fault.  Most organisations (especially in the mining industry) spend a lot of time inducting and training staff on their OH & S obligations.  They will be taught how to assess and prevent risk, correct manual handling, bullying and sexual harassment to name a few.  After this training it is the employees responsibility to ensure these practices are followed on a daily basis and if there is any component they don't understand they must advise their manager.  if an organisation hasn't given the employee all the tools they need to undertake their job safely then they are responsible.

THE Newman Government is under pressure to fast-track planned laws cracking down on Facebook parties after police and paramedics were targeted at another out-of-control event.
Lisa Tonkin's insight:

The safety of police officers is often overlooked but we have to remember that although danger is expected; risk can be accessed and reduced.  I guess a major component of their safety is reliant on the community and not just their colleagues.  This article is a great example of how the community can help maintain a police officers 'on the job' safety.

Cost of Work-related Injury and Illness - Safe Work Australia

Cost of Work-related Injury and Illness - Safe Work Australia | Human Resources (OH&S) | Scoop.it
This site contains materials supporting the WHS laws including; the model WHS Act, model WHS Regulations and model Codes of Practice. Analysis of data and research relating to work health and safety and workers’ compensation is available from this site.
Lisa Tonkin's insight:

Work related injuries not only affect the individual involved but their whole work team.  Whether you're a labourer or executive engineer your absence (or restricted work-load) can affect the performance of a team or quality of a job.  The timeframe originally estimated could blow out as well as the costs.  Most work-related injuries are avoidable which I think makes it all the more frustrating when they occur.
