Welcome!

John Rose's insight:

This article discussed the differentiation between the MLB team Seattle Mariners and their Triple-A minor league affiliate Tacoma Rainers. The focus of the Rainers is the family atmosphere where they provide many discounts and specials that appeal to the local families to bring them to the games for more of an entertainment kind of setting. The Rainers have by far cheaper prices where tickets don't exceed $10 and is easily a day out at the ball park for families with several kids, whereas the Mariners have the major league prices that can steer away families from going due to the high prices and less kid oriented without the mascots and goofy antics between innings to keep the entertainment for everyone to enjoy.

Why The NFL's Rooney Rule Matters

Why The NFL's Rooney Rule Matters | Sport Management: Rose, J | Scoop.it

John Rose's insight:

This article broke down the 15 job openings in the NFL this last off-season for head coaches and general managers, where there is a set up rule called the Rooney Rule which means that for positions like those there has to be at least one minority candidate interviewed. The surprise from this last off-season was that there was no minority hired for any of the 15 positions. Even after the Rule has been in effect there is only 3 minority head coaches and 5 general managers, which is very small to the 70% of NFL players who are minorities. George Foster who is a former NFL player has spoken publically about the lack of hiring of minorities, but its just hard to say that all 15 positions were the best candidate or not. Its hard to decide if racism is still playing a role and an issue that there is no definate answer to at the moment.

The Historic Decision To Cut Peyton Manning Worked Out Perfectly For Everyone

The Historic Decision To Cut Peyton Manning Worked Out Perfectly For Everyone | Sport Management: Rose, J | Scoop.it
In terms of NFL personnel decisions, the stakes...
John Rose's insight:

This article looks back at one of the biggest team decisions a sports franchise has had to make in recent memory. The Indianapolis Colts had Peyton Manning who is aging and who knows how many more years left in him to play and still had to pay him $28 million when they were also in line to get Andrew Luck with their top draft pick, whom some experts called him the greatet quarterback in the last 20 years. This was a huge problem the Colts organization was facing as Manning had brought them a Super Bowl championship, but at the same time they were set up to make themselves a contender for another 15 years if Andrew Luck lives up to his hype. This shows how an organization manages itself to be more productive and keep a quality product on the field for their fans and continue the success as the organization's main goal that Manning had started the trend of success when he first arrived in Indianapolis.

Female sports boss honoured
3News NZ
The woman who helped shape the last Rugby World Cup has been named the supreme winner at the inaugural Women of Influence awards.

John Rose's insight:

Therese Walsh being honored for her work is something that can be groundbreaking in the mold of bosses in sports and work organizations in general. Many bosses and owners are male and its a male dominant position, but Walsh being named the head of the 2015 Cricket world cup has shown that women are making steps into becoming more equal within the work force. There has been a glass ceiling of being able to see the top, but not being able to go to the top and the glass ceiling has appeared to start cracking after Therese's honor and new job position.

Orioles add sports psychologist to staff

Orioles add sports psychologist to staff | Sport Management: Rose, J | Scoop.it
Continuing an offseason of interesting front-office hires and inter-organization movement, Dan Duqette, the Orioles' executive vice president of baseball operations, has added sports psychologist Seth Kaplan to provide mental-performance services,...
John Rose's insight:

With the Baltimore Orioles hiring a psychologist, I think that it helped the organization all-around. With having a full-time psychologist on staff the team has a person that isn't directly involved within the organization and providing insight, whereas it has been noted when the team is in a slump that the feeling is negative among everyone and he is someone that can spark some positveness back into everyone.

Walk-On Basketball Player At Northwestern Awarded A Full Scholarship In Front Of His Team

Walk-On Basketball Player At Northwestern Awarded A Full Scholarship In Front Of His Team | Sport Management: Rose, J | Scoop.it
Northwestern basketball player James Montgomery III receives the news of a full scholarship in front of his team after being a walk-on the previous two seasons
John Rose's insight:

I thought that this was a great story because it is about a basketball player that was a walk-on and didn't have a scholarship, even though the rest of the team is on scholarships that pay for their school fees, whereas James Montgomery was putting in the same work and still having to pay for school. This goes to show that in any work environment that hard work pays off and this shows it as he is awarded with a scholarship his senior year in front of the team. This scholarship would be similar to what a raise or promotion would be in the usual work environment.

How To Get A Job In Pro Sports | Sport Management: Rose, J | Scoop.it
Sales, service and public relations get you up the sports management ladder. A look at 10 jobs to get you in the door.
John Rose's insight:

This article provided some good insight in how organizations hire new employees. The article explained that if you don't know someone directly within the organization that the best way is to prove you can sell. It has been shown that people with degrees will take the entry level jobs and use those jobs to display their talents and able to sell tickets and put butts in seats. The success from entry level sales is easily seeable and is a great way to obtain a better in the front office job position.

Tweeters, Twits and Twats: Why corporates need to control their employees (Part One) | Sports Business Insider

Tweeters, Twits and Twats: Why corporates need to control their employees (Part One) | Sports Business Insider | Sport Management: Rose, J | Scoop.it

The introduction of social media has been a common problem. A major problem. Reoccurring themes of battles between the individual and the organisation has proved hostile and ineffective. Sport is an industry where corporate communications is underdeveloped, and with so many instances being reported with sportspeople’s use of Twitter, it needs better regulation in place.

Via Peter Mellow
John Rose's insight:

What I found interesting in this article was how it broke down the influence of some athletes and sports writers and their impact they have on their respected organization. The study showed that 70% of tweets were neutral and the participants could greatly promote their organization more. The biggest finding was that anything that was tweeted negatively had the greatest impact due to the fact that negative tweets get the most retweets and most exposure from the retweets.
