Get into the spirit of March Madness by challenging your knowledge on the sizes of Metropolitan Statistic Areas and state population (just think electoral college).  I got a 56 on my first stab (59 for the states)...what did you get?

Although I've never been very good at brackets, I have a better shot with this one!  Neat way to engage students with population data!

Navigate court maps and view analysis of every shot taken over the ’11-'12 season for the Miami Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder.

Who said geography has nothing to do with sports?!?  While there are many cultural and economic impacts on sport preference and prevalence, let's discuss the geography of the hardwood and a spatial analysis of the shot selections between the two teams.  Clearly 'place matters' to many NBA players as their success on the court depends on finding their preferred spots within the flow of offense.

The United Countries of Baseball Map | AP HUMAN GEOGRAPHY DIGITAL STUDY: MIKE BUSARELLO | Scoop.it

This is the new and improved version of the familiar map can teach regions (formal, functional, vernacular) as well as the importance on TV markets as a diffusion mechanism for culture.  As mentioned by Andy Baker, "This map is also useful for showcasing 'threshold' and 'range' from 'Central Place Theory.' For instance, I ask my students, 'Why are the Mid-Atlantic & California coasts boundaries (range) so small compared to Great Plains teams?'"  Great idea Andy!

I'd like to see a sales map with this because even thoug the Yankees and Redsox regions are much smaller than the Atlanta Braves or Texas Rangers, they pobably sell MUCH more.

Online Quizzes for Regional Geography

Online Quizzes for Regional Geography | AP HUMAN GEOGRAPHY DIGITAL STUDY: MIKE BUSARELLO | Scoop.it

"For Regional Geography, I ask that all my students take an online quizzes before coming to class because it is very difficult to intelligently discuss European issues if you don’t know the countries of Europe, where they are and what other countries are on their borders.  Quizzes and knowing places doesn’t define geography, but if geography were English literature, knowing about places could be described as the alphabet–before you write a sonnet or critique an essay, you better know your ABC’s and basic grammar.  Given that, I like the Lizard Point Geography quizzes, Sheppard Software quizzes and those from Click that ‘Hood; they are simple, straightforward and comprehensive."

Shelby Porter's comment, September 19, 2013 2:21 PM
This certainly was interesting! It was challenging to identify some languages, and others you could figure out right away. Some of them I had never even heard of! Being exposed to a few languages growing up I thought I would be better at this, but I was very wrong. It is a little disappointing knowing that many people are not exposed to the many languages our world has to offer. It is also disheartening to hear many people get offended when people do not speak English here, when really America has no national dialect. I know that many schools require students to take a different language in high school, but it only the more common ones that are becoming popular in the U.S. (Spanish, French, Portuguese, etc.). Maybe some day children will become more exposed to the many different languages that have grown across the globe.
Sid McIntyre-DeLaMelena's curator insight, May 29, 11:59 AM

Nations of the World

This is old enough that have been some changes to the political maps since this was produced 1993.  What listed countries would now be marked incorrect?  Which ones, even then would be politically contentious to categorize as a country?

Muy bueno!!
Malice in Wonderland's comment, February 21, 2012 7:10 PM
If this was made in 1993 then the people who made it had no real grasp of political-geography. For example the Soviet Union had been gone for 2 years by then, yet it is still shown on the map. To top it off the voice over refers to it as "Russia". How's that for pointing out at least 16 errors at once? (Yeah I mean 16, not 15. Not a mistake. Think about it)
Seth Dixon's comment, February 21, 2012 7:50 PM
The 15 former Socialist Republics were labeled as Russia under one map, but was it still the Commonwealth of Independent States in 1993? That could be your elusive 16th. Czechoslovakia, Sudan and Yugoslavia have all fragmented while Zaire and Kampuchea need a name upgrade to the Congo and Cambodia. Palestine and Taiwan are two that are still as nebulous as ever, very difficult to define.

Puzzles that Make Geography Fun

Puzzles that Make Geography Fun | AP HUMAN GEOGRAPHY DIGITAL STUDY: MIKE BUSARELLO | Scoop.it

"Ever since London mapmaker and engraver John Spilsbury pasted one of his maps on a sheet of hardwood and cut it into small pieces with a marquetry saw (circa 1760), jigsaw puzzles have been used as a tool to teach children geography. Today, they are still a fun way for kids to learn more about their own country as well as the nations of the world."
