Need a Job? Invent It

Need a Job? Invent It | Hudson HS Learning Commons | Scoop.it
Finding a job is so 20th century. That is why young people today need to be more “innovation ready” than “college ready.”
Deborah Owen's insight:

“Today,” said Tony Wagner (Harvard) via e-mail, “because knowledge is available on every Internet-connected device, what you know matters far less than what you can do with what you know. The capacity to innovate — the ability to solve problems creatively or bring new possibilities to life — and skills like critical thinking, communication and collaboration are far more important than academic knowledge. As one executive told me, ‘We can teach new hires the content, and we will have to because it continues to change, but we can’t teach them how to think — to ask the right questions — and to take initiative.’

Dan Heath: Want Your Organization to Change? Put Feelings First

When we want people to change, we try to teach them something. We think if my Dad just understood the health complications obesity causes, he'd eat healthier...

Via Mark Treadwell
Deborah Owen's insight:

Studies show that "knowledge" does NOT cause change, but "feelings" DO. If you want someone to change their behavior, all the analysis in the world will not make a dent. But putting their feelings first, will be the first step to cause change.

Guided Inquiry is based on a model in which the affect is part of the process. If we ask students to consider their feelings, they are more likely to learn something better and with more interest and excitement.

Feelings before change

Leslie Maniotes's curator insight, April 29, 2013 2:12 PM

Feelings ARE the driver of human change... hmmmmm... not knowledge, so what are we missing out on without inquiry?  Student motivation and drive, excitement for learning, love of learning... maybe that's what can get people to see that school is BORING and inquiry can make school fun, exciting and learning engaging for students.

Deborah Owen's comment, April 30, 2013 9:42 AM
Their book, "Decisive" is on my list for this summer. I've heard Dan speak before and he's right on the money. I agree that too often school IS boring! You should have seen my class this week as they researched topics that THEY chose. It's a big difference.

Here, Dave Stuart and Erica Beaton share their approach to close reading (R.CCR.1) and a non-freaked out approach to the Common Core State Standards.
Deborah Owen's insight:
close reading slows us down and allows us to interpret difficult passages;it keeps us focused on our purpose for reading (e.g., finding a claim to argue with);it leaves us “bread crumbs” with which we can find our way back to our thinking later on, like when we’ve got to write a paper or prepare for a discussion.

The Coming Revolution in Public Education

The Coming Revolution in Public Education | Hudson HS Learning Commons | Scoop.it
Critics say the standardized test-driven reforms pushed by those like Michelle Rhee may actually be harming students.
Deborah Owen's insight:

""The reason America's overall scores on such tests are far lower is because high poverty schools produce far worse results -- and as the most economically unequal society in the industrialized world, we have far more poverty than our competitors, bringing down our overall scores accordingly." Addressing poverty and inequality are the keys to serving America's educational needs."
