What Does Excellence Look Like?: A new study shows the role of school libraries in learning

Deborah Owen's insight:

Outstanding article on school libraries! Please read!

"

“I think calling it a library is not accurate—to me it’s become a learning center that has resources,” said one principal. “When I see students in here, they’re doing research, maybe teacher-directed, but you know, I see a lot of them come in just to find out general information, to learn something—maybe not related to school, so to me it goes far beyond what we thought a library was.”

Not only do librarians enable learning, research also shows that they shape how learning takes place by helping teachers push the boundaries and innovate. As one principal said, “We do a lot of interdisciplinary teaching.... I think that our media specialists have enabled us to make that push, to be better at taking risks, and to do things that are normally outside of the box.”

New Report Highlights School Libraries' Promotion of Digital Literacy

New Report Highlights School Libraries' Promotion of Digital Literacy | Hudson HS Learning Commons | Scoop.it

“School libraries always have been interdisciplinary spaces deeply connected to the curriculum, instrumental in developing students' research and information literacy skills, and committed to creating an environment of free reading that supports lifelong learning and curiosity. These traditional roles and strengths are increasingly critical as society faces a deluge of digital information, and the lines between content user and content creator are blurred and even actively deconstructed.”

Do We Still Need Libraries?

The New York Times is running one of its Room for Debate series on the future of libraries. All four of their essays are excellent. And each of them answers the “debate” question in the affirmative: yes, we do still need libraries.  Of course, they are right.

Deborah Owen's insight:

"The argument that libraries are obsolete in a digital era is faulty.  But those of us who love libraries need to make the case for why that’s so.  This case has everything to do with libraries finding compelling ways to support education, helping people to learn, thrive, and be the best civic actors we can be.  We have to recreate the sense of wonder and importance of libraries, as public spaces, as research labs, as maker-spaces, and as core democratic institutions for the digital age."

DAVID WHEELER: Have a question? Ask a librarian

DAVID WHEELER: Have a question? Ask a librarian | Hudson HS Learning Commons | Scoop.it
One of the most under-appreciated jobs in education is the school librarian. Where else can you get book recommendations for readers of all ages or help with writing an essay?
Deborah Owen's insight:

The principal of Southeastern Voc-Tech HS in Easton, MA loves his librarian! This is what he sees when he walks around.
