Solving the World's Biggest Problems Takes Ensembles, Not Soloists - Huffington Post

Solving the World's Biggest Problems Takes Ensembles, Not Soloists - Huffington Post | Hub Birmingham | Scoop.it

Fortunately, more and more people are recognizing the need for collaborative teams to tackle the biggest challenges humanity faces. We are seeing partnerships of this kind being built by organizations like New Profit to address issues such as early childhood education, college readiness, and the need for community health workers. Consulting firms like FSG and Deloitte/Monitor have set up entire practice units to assist groups in pulling together such collaborations.

A social divide, not digital; The 'digital divide' is only superficially digital| Liam Barrington-Bush in Guardian | Hub Birmingham | Scoop.it

Liam Barrington-Bush:
There's much talk of the 'Twitterati', or the middle-class intelligentsia dominating the online world. This is assumed wisdom (particularly in the voluntary sector), but its limited truth is likely more reflective of the social divisions, than of actual Twitter usage.

The 'digital divide' is only superficially digital; until we start to unpick its social dimensions, many of our organisations may continue to have online conversations among themselves. Our organisational efforts need to move outside of our own comfort zones. The online world is just doing us the favour of making our social divisions more transparent than they've ever been ... at least if we choose to look through them.

Impact Investing in Social Enterprises - Hub LA | Hub Birmingham | Scoop.it

On Tuesday December 7th, Hub LA Founding Members, foundation leaders, and private investors gathered at the California Endowment in Downtown Los Angeles at the invitation of Academies for Social Enterprise and Hub Los Angeles for a seminar on Impact Investing. A generally accepted definition of Impact Investing is when “investments create positive social or environmental impact beyond financial return,” according to JP Morgan and the Rockefeller Foundation.

Movement of the Day: the Open Venture Movement

“First of all we talk about radical transparency – because, like we said before, we believe in ‘social by open.’ See the potential disruptive genius of Fairphone – co-invested in by our friends at BGV – who are attacking the socially unjust & environmentally destructive dirty secrets of the smartphone industry by making their own smartphone. By being absolutely transparent about where their raw materials come from, they aim to force better working practices right across the industry. A great social-by-open start-up story – but equally, radical transparency applies to tax behaviour, remuneration, ownership, political lobbying – as Indy Johar explained in his draft for an Open Limited Sector.

"Kevin Jones, one of the other owners of the Bay Area Hubs, reported, “I’m passionate about the Hub because I’ve seen people make the connections, find the mentors, partners, peers, employees and investors that take their social enterprises to the next level, to enable them to enact their dreams to build a better world. We built the Impact Hub as a place where visionaries and doers could meet and make magic together. It’s working, and it’s growing. It’s expanding in the U.S. and in the world because it’s working.”
