Carl Jung on "The Symbolic Life"

Carl Jung on "The Symbolic Life" | Universaliss | Scoop.it

From C.G. Jung...."You see, man is in need of a symbolic life - badly in need. We only live banal, ordinary, rational, or irrational things . . . but we have no symbolic life. Where do we live symbolically? Nowhere except where we participate in the ritual of life. . . . "

Have you got a corner somewhere in your house where you perform the rites, as you can see in India? Even the very simple houses there have at least a curtained corner where the members of the household can perform the symbolic life, where they can make their new vows or their meditation. We don't have it; we have no such corner. We have our own room, of course, - but there is a telephone that can ring us up at any time, and we always must be ready. We have no time, no place.

We have no symbolic life, and we are all badly in need of the symbolic life. Only the symbolic life can express the need of the soul - the daily need of the soul, mind you! And because people have no such thing, they can never step out of this mill - this awful, banal, grinding life in which ... (Click title for more)

Depth Insights » A Spoonful of Depth Brings the Soul to Life: The Psychology of Mary Poppins by Stacey Jill Zackin | Universaliss | Scoop.it

We cannot have the extraordinary without the ordinary. Just as the supernatural is hidden in the natural. In order to fly, you need something solid to take off from. It’s not the sky that interests me but the ground. . . . When I was in Hollywood the [script] writers said, surely Mary Poppins symbolizes the magic that lies behind everyday life. I said no, of course not, she is everyday life, which is composed of the concrete and the magic.

—P. L. Travers, author of Mary Poppins (in Lawson, 1999, p. 161)

Clearly, there is something special about Mary Poppins that captures the collective imagination, yet the goal of this essay is not to apply the analytic lens to better understand the character of Mary Poppins, but to utilize Mary Poppins as an analogical tool to better understand the character of depth psychologists.

Depth psychologists believe that within our unconscious lies a wealth of material that expands our capacity to understand, accept, release, and repair aspects of ourselves, that can lead to a more developed sense of wholeness and connection. Such information reveals itself through symbols, metaphors, dreams, imagery, intuition, synchronicity...

Something New, Here & Now (Focusing Oriented Therapy) | Universaliss | Scoop.it

"You’re sitting with a client, fighting your own feelings of frustration and boredom as she tells you the same sad story that you heard last week and the week before. She’s explaining to you, again, what’s wrong with her and why she can’t change. You long to be able to help her, but nothing that you say seems to get through. You start wondering if someone else could do a better job. You even wonder if you should refer her to a physician for medication, which shows you’re really starting to get desperate. In the end, all you want is to see her eyes light up, her shoulders lift, her breath deepen, as she finally “gets it” and makes important connections, sees her life in a new way, feels fresh hope. These are the moments we live for as clinicians.

Of course, we know that not every session needs to bring that kind of dramatic change. Some clients just need to sit with difficult feelings without much seeming to change from week to week, and yet their sessions still feel productive. We appreciate their willingness to remain engaged in their own inner exploration, however difficult it may be, and we can tell they appreciate our willingness to hang in there with them. Even if we can’t foresee the outcome, we trust that eventually they’ll work through their trauma, or gain confidence, or learn whatever it is they need to learn through the safety and empowerment of their alliance with us.

But then..."

The New Republic

The thread connecting the novels that Obama purchased is the notion that the intimate dramas of those existing far from the corridors of power are worth recording and reading. Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Lowland charts the divergent lives of two brothers from Calcutta. In The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini sets a story of personal guilt and obligation amid the chaos of Afghanistan. The Buddha in the Attic by Julie Otsuka gives voice to a chorus of Japanese mail-order brides brought to California in the early 20th-century. A Constellation of Vital Phenomena, my own novel, traces a handful of characters across war-torn Chechnya. (Before my head could get too big, my mom reminded me that Obama also picked up Harold and the Purple Crayon.)

Creating may often include anxiety and other sorts of fear. We need to develop courage and learn how to deal with these feelings to be more fully creative.

One idea from Eric Maisel: “All day long we’re supposed to get things right: pay our bills, pick up our kids, and so on. It is very hard to move from this everyday mindset to a creative mindset where huge mistakes and messes are permitted and even welcomed."

The Sense of a Baseball Ending - The Good Phight | Universaliss | Scoop.it
The Sense of a Baseball Ending
The Good Phight

Frank Kermode's literary critical opus The Sense of an Ending (not to be confused with the recent bestseller by Julian Barnes) focuses on the fatal flaw of the novel as a genre, namely that it never seems to be able to produce a good ending.  Kermode comes to many conclusions, and I won't corrupt what is one of the more readable candidates from my own profession in the interest of giving you a really literary historical blow by blow.  Suffice it say, though, I think I am in agreement with Kermode when I say that the reason the novel can't seem to end sufficiently is that it is the literary documentation of every day life.  Epics concern heroes (though they come close to the novel; saved only by the gods); poems rely upon the tyrant of form; plays gesture toward futurity in their very temporality.  But the novel, like everyday life, just ends.

We pursue a narrative looking for satisfaction, and what is satisfying about the end is undercut by its very finitude.  Not all ends get tied up.  Not all answers are given.

Psychology and Fairy Tales--by Carrie Hughes

Psychology and Fairy Tales--by Carrie Hughes | Universaliss | Scoop.it

Beginning with the fathers of the field, Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, psychoanalysts have turned to fairy tales in an effort to understand the human mind. This is accomplished in two ways—either by studying the psychology and needs of the creators of these stories or by examining the characters in the stories. Just as many fairy tales hinge upon a revelation of the truth about those who have been somehow disguised, so too, fairy tales cut to the essence of the human psyche.

Freud suspected that dreams and fairy tales stem from the same place, and the relaxation of inhibition that occurs in the dream state is also true of many story tellers. So fairy tales might prove, like dreams, windows into the unconscious.... (click title to read more)

In the subsequent research that we did, we found that the more pathological person or individuals tended to have a very limited range of fantasy. It was usually a limited fantasy of a paranoid kind, of some megalomaniac kind, that they repeated over and over again. They didn’t have the wide range of fantasy that the average person has.

They became caught up in just one set of things. I realized later in the course of my research, that fantasies are really precursors to action. Just as our plans will lead us to try to act in certain ways, our fantasies are. But that also brought out the fact that our night dreams are simply continuations of the daytime fantasy, except that the night dreams, because you’re not having to process input from the outside world, are a little more strange and bizarre. They’re more purely associative, whereas in day dreams, you might have some of the same associations, but you are reality oriented, so that you quickly dismiss those. Or, you play with them, recognizing that they’re just imaginative productions. You use it to pass the time.

Gene expression changes with meditation

Gene expression changes with meditation | Universaliss | Scoop.it

"A new study by researchers in Wisconsin, Spain, and France reports the first evidence of specific molecular changes in the body following a period of mindfulness meditation.

The study investigated the effects of a day of intensive mindfulness practice in a group of experienced meditators, compared to a group of untrained control subjects who engaged in quiet non-meditative activities. After eight hours of mindfulness practice, the meditators showed a range of genetic and molecular differences, including altered levels of gene-regulating machinery and reduced levels of pro-inflammatory genes, which in turn correlated with faster physical recovery from a stressful situation.

"To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper that shows rapid alterations in gene expression within subjects associated with mindfulness meditation practice," says study author Richard J. Davidson, founder of the Center for Investigating Healthy Minds and the William James and Vilas Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

"Most interestingly, the changes were observed in genes that are the current targets of anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs," says Perla Kaliman, first author of the article and a researcher at the Institute of Biomedical Research of Barcelona, Spain (IIBB-CSIC-IDIBAPS), where the molecular analyses were conducted...."
