LIBRARY TIP: Source 'gold standard' articles wherever possible.

LIBRARY TIP: Source 'gold standard' articles wherever possible. | HPS202 Deakin University | Scoop.it

Not all scholarly articles are the same.  Look for those that report on orginal research:  studies, experiments, surveys etc.  Other articles such as literature reviews, systematic reviews and meta analyses can provide useful references to original research.

TIPS

Key in one concept and its related terms in each search box.

The asterisk * at the end of a word finds all the variant endings of that word e.g. parent* = parent, parents, parental, parenting

Use 'AND' to combine different concepts e.g. parent* AND perfection*

Don't forget to tick the box next to "Scholarly (Peer-reviewed) articles'.

LIBRARY TIP: Find newspaper articles

LIBRARY TIP: Find newspaper articles | HPS202 Deakin University | Scoop.it

For newspaper and popular magazine articles try these two resources:

NewsBank

 http://ezproxy.deakin.edu.au/login?url=http://infoweb.newsbank.com

Library Press Display

 http://ezproxy.deakin.edu.au/login?url=http://library.pressdisplay.com/pressdisplay/viewer.aspx

Chrissy Freestone's insight:

Often newspaper reports refer to a study or research having been conducted.  You could try and locate the original paper by doing a Google search on the author's name/institution/topic keyword.  For example, one recent newspaper article about children's play referred to research having been done by an urban planning academic, Professor Tony Hall, head of the Urban Research Program at Griffith University.  You could google this to track down a citation to a paper that you could then search for on the library website.

Unstructured Free Play Important for Kids | MomsTeam

Unstructured Free Play Important for Kids | MomsTeam | HPS202 Deakin University | Scoop.it
Unstructured free play is important for healthy child development
Chrissy Freestone's insight:

Blog posts can be a useful source of information but they are not considered scholarly.  Some blog posts make references to research papers to support their arguments (e.g. in this blog post they refer to a  report from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)) so see if you can find the original paper that's being referred to.  Not all the details will be provided so try googling keywords (eg. institution name/authors/topic keywords) to see if you can find a citation that relates to it - or even something similar.

Select People>Children and Youth

The ABS produces statistics covering a range of topics relevant to children and youth including family, community, social participation, health, education and work. These statistics play an important role in describing the lives of children and youth and can illuminate problems they experience and some of the factors associated with those problems. For these reasons, statistics are integral to research, policy design and program evaluation, which aim to improve the well being of children and youth.
