Engaging and delighting in cultural difference

Remember the old adage ‘the best way to remember your story is to tell the truth?’  Well, it’s the same with Intercultural Communications.  The best way to interact with others is to be keenly aware of yourself…but also hyper sensitive and receptive to the individuality and autonomous experience of others around you.

Spell Up. Speak to play and build up your English.

Spell Up. Speak to play and build up your English. | How to teach online effectively? | Scoop.it

This is a great new game from Google which helps students develop their vocabulary through spelling and pronunciation. Using Chrome, students can actually speak to the computer and listen to the pronunciation of the words as they build a word tower. They can even listen to a speaking dictionary telling them what the words mean. This should get your students working autonomously to develop their own vocabulary and if they sign in they can track and share their results.

Technology can also make it more difficult to form an identity. There are more versions of "self" than ever before, which gives kids who may already be struggling to figure out who they are even more to juggle. In an interview with NPR, media theorist and author Douglas Rushkoff explained the feeling in a term he coined: “digiphrenia.”

"Some would say in this model the teachers matter less since computers are taking over some of the instruction. But I actually think teachers matter more in this model. They are now the orchestrators of these complex learning paths, picking which program should go for which student. They have to now target all the skills that the computer can’t do.  How to motivate that child. How to connect what they’re doing to their home life."

You've heard of Blended Learning strategies by now along with all the other technology driven methods available. What this particle TED talk focuses on is building a model that encourages student led learning using technology, while the teacher serves as the motivator, and your guide for exploring the student's learning potential. The most important aspect however when trying to implement a Blended learning model,  is being flexible in its delivery and outcomes.  As there are many ways to  build your platform, just keep your students at the forefront of your decision making in order to Meet Them Where They Are.

The starting point of GCE is to recognize the relevance of education in understanding and resolving global issues in their social, political, cultural, economic and environmental dimensions. It also implies acknowledging the role of education in moving beyond the development of knowledge and so-called cognitive skills – e.g. reading and mathematics - to build values, social and emotional skills and attitudes among learners that can facilitate international cooperation and promote social transformation.
