Guide to Creating Tech-Friendly Classroom Management Strategies | Edudemic | How to teach online effectively? | Scoop.it
If you’re a teacher who grew up in the pre-Internet era, you understand how tech innovation has revamped the educational landscape. Gone are the days of the blackboard and mimeograph. Teachers today carry a heavier (and more complicated) toolbox than ever before. The question is, how efficiently are you using your tools? Inviting Students to

Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

 Technology learning is less structured than traditional learning. While it’s important to prepare lessons wisely, there comes a point when you must “let it go” and give in to the human desire for freedom of exploration.

Bringing technology into your classroom can create major shifts, and planning ahead is a good idea. This post shares a guide that has 4 strategies to assist you. The examples provides are for a first grade classroom, but they will provide a foundation for many grade levels.

Strategy 1: Do your homework. This focuses on three areas - lesson planning, legwork and troubleshooting.

Strategy 2: Identify learning goals. This section provides two samples and discusses the value of learning goals.

Strategy 3: Step away from the computer. Keep an eye on your class. You may need to move from 'tech time' to other modes of learning more quickly than planned.

Strategy 4: Capitalize on their desire to explore. Prepare lessons and realize that the students work may lead to questions that provide options for exploring other areas.

There are many helpful ideas in this short guide. With younger students you may want to allow exploration by using a tool such as Symbaloo, where you can create links to websites that you have vetted and allow students the ability to go to new places that you know are safe.

If taught young, self-control skills can have strong protective effects, even helping those whose vulnerabilities might make them more likely to fall behind economically. That's according to Walter Mischel, author of "The Marshmallow Test," in part four of his conversation with Paul Solman.
Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

So I think just the recognition that there is a clear relationship between what we do and what we get is a fundamental thing that needs to be taught. The reduction of stress levels is absolutely crucial for people not to be in elevated hot systems that make learning and attention impossible. So yeah, I think there are huge a number of things that can be done.

British technology's biggest risk: A skills shortage - HITC Business | How to teach online effectively? | Scoop.it
Britain's capital has firmly established itself on the global tech scene, but there remain some risks to its upward trajectory.
Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

British universities also need to transform into pipelines of tech talent - in the same way Stanford and Berkeley quench Silicon Valley's thirst for skilled graduates. While some of Britain's newer universities have embraced tech and coding, too many higher-education establishments continue to place a disproportionate focus on more conventional or humanities-based subjects. Furthermore, it is vital we ensure that those universities which do teach data skills are tuned into the tech industry, so the skills they offer are relevant and applicable to the working world.

Teacher effectiveness is a hot topic in education circles right now. How do you measure it, and how can you improve it?
Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

On the importance of mentorship

Another thing that holds our country back is that we have this culture of privacy around teaching. [American teachers] spend all of their day only with their students and they don't have exposure to their peers. In Japan, it's quite the opposite. They have [a] practice ... which really turns teaching into a public science. As many as a thousand teachers come from all across the country to watch a single lesson and then dissect it afterward.

It cannot be denied that technology has had an impact upon the amount of physical interaction within human relationships on both social and professional levels.
Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:
The question of whether or not technology is actually replacing humanity and separating social and professional relationships is another common complaint. This statement has been greatly debunked by the emergence of websites which promote ideas such as crowdfunding and the license-free sharing of art and intellectual property.  In these regards as well as by overcoming geographical restraints, technology has actually brought us closer together.

Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

Very interesting article.

There is always room for improvement in teaching, but I strongly disagree with Dinham that "we need greater control over and surveillance of teachers".

The rapid and constant growth of technology is an obvious area where teachers need to be experimenting constantly.

How to Get Students to Work Harder

How to Get Students to Work Harder | How to teach online effectively? | Scoop.it
Some kids have an understandable worry that they don't belong in school. According to new research, changing this belief can help turn low-achievers into motivated students.
Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

" They found that among Latino, African American, and first-generation students who were given information to counter belonging uncertainty, 86 percent completed the credits, compared to 82 percent the years before and after the study (2011 and 2013). In contrast, the belonging messages had no significant impact on incoming white and Asian American students: 90 percent of them were on track after one semester, the same proportion as in the years before and after the study. The same pattern played out for students in the mindset and combined belonging/mindset groups. Conversely, in the control group that received only generic messages, there was no improvement in performance among African American, Latino and first-generation students."

Using grammar correctly could be challenging may be not for those who are English native speaker, but surely for those who learn English from scratch. English language and its difficulties can be very much puzzling. Although, a dictionary or software can assist learners but it cannot give accurate answer. In fact, word processing programs are not very much effective in correcting grammar errors completely.

Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

Online programs need to offer a balance of learning and socialisation activities where students can interact with each other.

Courses ideally:

Use online ice-breaker activities, such as online introductions at the start of the course, to encourage students to meet and interact in the virtual environment;

Make communication and collaboration between students part of assessment, such as group assignments and peer assessments;

Provide an online “student lounge” or encourage students to use Skype, Facebook or other networking sites to interact beyond the formal course;

Schedule and facilitate real-time learning sessions using virtual classroom technology.

Teacher presence also contributes to a sense of belonging in the online context.

Chronicle of Higher Education: Stop Accrediting Christian Colleges - Stand to Reason Blog

Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

By awarding accreditation to religious colleges, the process confers legitimacy on institutions that systematically undermine the most fundamental purposes of higher education. Skeptical and unfettered inquiry is the hallmark of American teaching and research. However, such inquiry cannot flourish—in many cases, cannot even survive—inside institutions that erect religious tests for truth. The contradiction is obvious….
