Schools' financial storm: Muskegon-area legislators address school funding, policy

Schools' financial storm: Muskegon-area legislators address school funding, policy | How to teach online efectively? | Scoop.it
Legislators often are blamed by school officials for failing to adequately fund education, approving policies that erode the role of traditional public education and tying the hands of locally-elected boards of education.
Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

Teachers have been forced to pay for needed classroom supplies out of their own pockets, effectively lowering their pay. We simply must restore funding to our schools. Democrats have tried to increase funding to K-12 education multiple times, but we have been ignored to date.

Time to retire from online learning?

Time to retire from online learning? | How to teach online efectively? | Scoop.it

And then there’s MOOCs. I can’t express adequately just how pissed off I am about MOOCs – not the concept, but all the hubris and nonsense that’s been talked and written about them. At a personal level, it was as if 45 years of work was for nothing. All the research and study I and many others had done on what makes for successful learning online were totally ignored, with truly disastrous consequences in terms of effective learning for the vast majority of participants who took MOOCs from the Ivy League universities. Having ignored online learning for nearly 20 years, Stanford, MIT and Harvard had to re-invent online learning in their own image to maintain their perceived superiority in all things higher educational.

Via Nik Peachey
Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

Lastly, I am concerned that the computer scientists seem to be taking over online education. Ivy League MOOCs are being driven mainly by computer scientists, not educators. Politicians are looking to computer science to automate learning in order to save money. Computer scientists have much to offer, but they need more humility and a greater willingness to work with other professionals, such as psychologists and teachers, who understand better how learning operates. This is a battle that has always existed in educational technology, but it’s one I fear the educators are losing. The result could be disastrous, but that’s a theme for a whole set of blog posts.

Yes! As an online learner and teacher I found the absence of best practices for online learning missing in all my Mooc participation. It would better be termed distance learning, falling back to the correspondence education of the past.
cioccas's curator insight, April 16, 3:33 PM

This paragraph exactly reflects my thoughts about MOOCs. Glad to hear it coming from a leader in the online and distance learning field as this type of voice has been swamped by the unquestioning embracing of MOOCs by all and sundry!

Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

I see teachers as important components of society. I see teachers as leaders in disguise. Teachers guide students towards achieving common goals, learning about life and understanding the real world.

In the classroom, out in the school yard, on excursions or at sporting events, teachers are continuously educating students about handling social pressures, working in challenging team environments and most of all, getting the students to enjoy learning how to learn.

Fourteen years ago, when her daughter was four years old, Terry Sopotnick made a decision about her child’s education that wasn’t particularly popular.
Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

The main difference between a home-schooled and a public- or private-schooled student is their transcript. While public and private-schooled students generally have uniform transcripts, home-schooled students’ transcripts can vary widely. Home-schooled families make customized transcripts to reflect their student’s academic experience, including detailed lists of textbooks, enrichment activities and course syllabi, Cutts said. Admission officers also like to see standardized test scores to assess how well students retain information.

3 Online Tools That Can Reduce Teaching Time

3 Online Tools That Can Reduce Teaching Time | How to teach online efectively? | Scoop.it
The introduction of the Internet to the classroom has changed the way students learn and are taught. Thankfully, there are a number of online tools that can reduce teaching time and time spent in the classroom by a dramatic percentage.
Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

There is nothing that reduces the overall teaching time greater than teaching your students how to properly touch type. Typing lessons have been shamefully neglected in today's public schools, even though it is one of the most important skills that a student can learn. It doesn't need to be an enormous chore though as there is dozens of sites online that offer student oriented lessons for free. Sites like RataType and Type Racer help these students to learn the proper techniques to become a touch typist independently. This drastically reduces the teaching time needed for this exercise.

Private Tutor Halina

There are many ways to learn English but the best way is to have a private tutor.

It is clear that a non-native who knows how to teach is way better than a native who doesn't know how to teach.

You need someone who can motivate you, can help you learn how to enjoy studying English as well as speaking it.

Someone who can answer your questions, develop your skills, and design a learning package that meets your needs in English.

With English Coach, you can learn English from the comfort of your own home or from your office, at a time that suits you.

Communication in English nowadays is a MUST.

Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

For today's students, learning can happen anytime, anywhere. Digital resources are growing more intuitive, more personalized and more affordable. With real-time assessments, teachers can identify how each student learns, where improvement is needed, and which learning strategies work best. New technologies allow students to learn from materials tailored to their progress, tied to clear academic standards and accompanied by constant, actionable feedback.

LAKELAND | Florida Polytechnic University will be non-traditional in many ways, but one of the most dramatic alternatives to a typical university setting will be seen in the library. Or, rather, not seen.

"Our library space on campus will be a contemplative space, as well as a collaborative laboratory for learning. Our library space has been designed so that the space itself can learn and evolve as technology advances."

It's the way things are going in today's library environment, Miller said. "There are many almost all electronic libraries, in schools, colleges, universities, as well as public libraries," she said. "Digital collections have matured enough to provide most resources needed for STEM learning."
