The Power of Routines

Capabilities and competencies, we argued, don’t live in isolation (as they do on paper). Rather, they tend to show up together in key routines that differentiate the highest performing employees from average performing ones.  Trying to target individual competencies and discrete organizational capabilities, while novel and very clean on paper, bares little relationship to the world of work.

How To Make The Whole Organization Agile

How To Make The Whole Organization Agile | How to set up a Consulting Services Business | Scoop.it
The primary goal of making money for shareholders is at odds with the values of Agile where the primary focus is on delivering value to the customer. In Agile, making money is the result, not the goal. When those two different goals are espoused in different parts or different levels of the organization, there is permanent friction. Unless this issue is resolved, the adoption of Agile at the team level is unlikely to stick.

Is Agile Just Another Management Fad?

Is Agile Just Another Management Fad? | How to set up a Consulting Services Business | Scoop.it
Now that Agile is being blessed by mainstream business journals, the inevitable question becomes: is Agile just another management fad? That is to say, an idea that enjoys intense and widely-shared but short-lived enthusiasm without any basis in its actual qualities. The phenomenon is endemic in management. There’s even an acronym, “BOHICA, or “bend over, here it comes again,” to describe it, with each initiative promising so much and each delivering so little. Is Agile just the latest addition to the list?

Do start-ups need HR?

Do start-ups need HR? | How to set up a Consulting Services Business | Scoop.it
The typical evolution of HR in organizations used to be as follows. In the first phase the founder or founders do everything themselves. After a while, when the organization has 20-30 people a general assistant is hired. She or he does all kind of general tasks. Making sure there are enough desks and computers. Coordinating recruitment. Taking care someone clean the office at the end of the day. Receive some customers. Around employee number 100 some more specialization is required. A junior HR professional is hired. Or the general assistant is promoted into HR. As the organization becomes big

Becoming Digital

Becoming Digital | How to set up a Consulting Services Business | Scoop.it
...we have deployed digital technology to improve analog processes and failed to innovate new processes that are digital. "Becoming Digital" is actually an alien concept to me. I can't remember a time before having a PC at my fingertips. This is coincidental, based purely on the year I was born and consider myself in the first generation of 'internet enabled pre-teens'. This means I was in the first generation to have a social life developed around social media. Among the first popular networks was MSN/AOL messenger, then as soon as I had my university email address I reg

Part I of  Transformational Currents in the Workplace --- Complexity in Systems, Organizations, and the Workplace by Markku Allison

We have long tried to manage today’s work using tools suited for complicated work, but we fail on a regular basis: industry research tells us at least 30 percent of projects are behind schedule and over budget. The diagram represents Dave Snowden’s Cynefin Framework and does a great job illustrating distinctions between simple, complicated, and complex.

I don't think it's as complicated as this See roles in previous scoop It's then about asking do policies, procedures, practices, processes and systems mean it's simple for people to bring their best to their work and where the answer is no changing it
