It’s no secret agile projects can fail, but do you know the reasons for agile failure and how to avoid them? I could tell you why I think they fail. Instead, let me share what nearly 4,000 of your colleagues said were the eight reasons why agile projects fail and what you can do about it.
According to Lynda Gratton, work is no longer being defined by HR, but rather by ‘context’, which is created by the emergence of megatrends and their impact on society: “Work is being shaped by technology, globalisation, democracy and the ageing workforce, and the opportunity you have to make work as you want it,” she tells me. “We are now faced with a “hollowing out” of work – medium-skilled jobs have disappeared and are being replaced by technology, so there’s either low-paid work or specialised high-paid work, with a huge emphasis on education and lifelong learning.” And because people lie at the heart of corporate purpose, this means that organisations must build a context to innovate and excite them – which, for Gratton, presents a huge opportunity for HR to be positioned as ‘enabler’ and ‘inspirer’.
Now that Agile is being blessed by mainstream business journals, the inevitable question becomes: is Agile just another management fad? That is to say, an idea that enjoys intense and widely-shared but short-lived enthusiasm without any basis in its actual qualities. The phenomenon is endemic in management. There’s even an acronym, “BOHICA, or “bend over, here it comes again,” to describe it, with each initiative promising so much and each delivering so little. Is Agile just the latest addition to the list?

After a while, when the organization has 20-30 people a general assistant is hired. She or he does all kind of general tasks. Making sure there are enough desks and computers. Coordinating recruitment. Taking care someone clean the office at the end of the day. Receive some customers. Around employee number 100 some more specialization is required.
